Version: VLC media player 0.8.1
Pros: Its capable of playing virtualy every media type ive come across. Very usefull if you have recieved an unexpected video type, VLC will most probably be able to play it for you. Never failed me.

Version: VLC media player 0.8.1
Pros: I have been using VCL since 2002 and I love the program. It allows you to view the majority of media files. Where software like Quick Time Pro and Microsoft Player fall short, VLC excels allowing to play .avi files, .divx files and etc. VLC also does a great job with the audio, allowing to kick up the volume outside of the computer audio system.
Cons: The older versions of the software should sometimes crash. I am downloading the 0.8.1 for the first time. I will report back if there are any cons.

"A perfect software to replace the Windows Media Player"
Pros: I've my Windows XP running on a very slow machine, it hangs quient often due to the poor hardware performance. so I've decided to delete the IE rendering Engine from my Windows XP by using a software called XPLite, everything started running smoothly after the IE has been removed. I can find many excellent alternative software to replace the removed IE-related components such as OE, Frontpage, MSN, and etc...
But the only problem was that I can't find a suitable media player that is capable to play the WMV9 file after the Windows Media Player and its codec has been uninstalled along with the IE Rendering Engine.
I've tried K-Lite Mega Codec with MPC, and Realplayer, both of them don't work after the WMV codec has gone, then I also tried the MPlayer, it works fine with its built-in WMV decoder though, but the MPlayer only works under DOS Command Mode and its Windows Frontend doesn't look so nice neither...
After days of Google Search, finally I've found this software "VLC Media Player" on Download.com - It has a user's friendly interface which looks similar to the "Media Player Classic" , VLC has its own codec pack with the WMV9 decoding ability. it won't cause any software conflicts with the existing codec packs such as Nimo and K-Lite on your system. Further more, VLC also provide the Mozilla Plugin! WOW! I can only say it is the perfect solution for my problem and the best alternative of the Microsoft WMP!
Cons: I hope VLC can have better Skin, that all...

Version: VLC media player 0.8.1
Pros: Living in the UK and having a Mac from the US has been a pain because you can only switch DVD regions like 5 times. I brought many classic DVDs with me from the US and whenever I rented or bought DVDs from here, I switched region codes until I ran out of switches. I looked all over for something to unlock it but they were always for PC only. The first thing I did as soon as I downloaded it was to try 2 different DVDs from 2 regions and they played great. Now I can even watch avi, and DIVX. BONUS!
Cons: Region 1 DVD menus have a few color screw-ups, but who cares, it plays the movies flawlessly.

"works but, disappointing - many bugs, download microsoft media plyr"
Pros: does more than quicktime
Cons: hangs on 10.3.8- ALOT of errors while playing, not as good video as microsoft media player for mac. my overall search for a better media player than quicktime was a low blow.
