When it comes to video files, nothing is ever as easy as it should be. Thankfully, VLC Media Player offers a one-stop solution for the file-format problem. The program supports playback of OGG, MP2, MP3, MP4, DivX, DVD, and a whole slew of other file types. In addition, it also can function as a streaming media server. Because of its open-source foundation, VLC Media Player evolves quickly, with new features and fixes released frequently. Though the interface varies from platform to platform, the sparseness of the Windows version leaves plenty to be desired. The skinned mode perks things up slightly, but the program seems to suffer from unpredictable behavior when skinned. Also, the basic task of opening a file is far more confusing than it should be; the program gives you several options, including the head-scratching Quick Open File. Overall, though, VLC Media Player is a must-have application for its ability to open just about any type of video file you throw at it. Watch the CNET video review of VLC Media Player:

It also can be used as a server for unicast or multicast streams in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.
0.8.1 is a bug fix release that resolves a number of issues.

Version: VLC Media Player 0.8.1
Pros: Great Multi-media player, plays so many different formats, including video and audio. With this program, you won't need to install codecs all the time, or huge codec packages that take up a lot of space and time,its all in one place. Great free product.
Cons: None that I can think of.

Pros: it actually plays anything and everything! no adware or spyware either. wayy better than real or winamp. m not even gonna compare it with windows media player, coz wmp sucks bigtime. i had this file which neither of real/winamp/divx/wmp wud play, coz of a missing codec [i think d codec was alexAC3 - wmp n divx MPEG4 issues] but vlc played it fine. vlc is the BEST for all kinds of video!
Cons: the interface cud use a lot of improvement... its a bit confusing at the beginning - but only until u get used to it. its not really great as an audio player, but since they call it a video player - thats okay with me...

Pros: * if it is a movie file, VLC will play it. No other player comes close in compatibility
* it does not need codecs and it can be installed completely off the system (there is a .zip version of it)
* works on many OSes
Overall a good thing to have whenever your favorite player doesn?t like a particular movie.
Cons: * the interface is not as good as in MPClassic

Pros: I Use Zoom Player mostly, this out of habit. Audio I use XM Play. but this piece of software is fantastic !.
It plays things that rarely Zoom Player can not ! Congratulations VLC your have entered my heart, via my ears and eyes.

Cons: I FEEL SO GUILTY ITS FREE !
