What's the top media player? Opinions differ, but if you mean one that's open-source freeware, plays more files than the others, can be totally customized and configured to suit, and is not only updated frequently but also regularly offers new features and options created by a huge community of programmers and users, the answer is VLC Media Player.

Our default media player for years, VLC has managed to stay ahead of the competition in features and performance, if not always looks, though that's easy enough to fix if you want to. VLC and its source code are maintained by the all-volunteer VideoLAN Organization.

VLC is quick and easy to install. You can make VLC your default media player for various (or all) file types, but if you just want to try VLC without giving up your current player, you can skip the file associations. We clicked the familiar orange-and-white traffic cone icon to open VLC's famously plain interface, which is also a model of efficient layout design (and completely customizable, in any case: clicking the skinned player option in VideoLAN's Start Menu folder opens VLC in a sleek new view).

Effects? VLC has 'em: Audio, Video, and Synchronization effects, including a graphic equalizer with many presets; totally customizable dynamic range compression; an audio spatializer tool; AtmoLight video effects; interactive zoom; logos and overlays; and even special effects like blur, wave, water, and mirror effects. VLC's minimized interface hides the player's controls until you need them, and a raft of hot keys make it easy to toggle between views and to quickly access any of VLC's features. Playback quality is as good as it gets. We've used VLC to play MP3s, WAVs, CDs, DVDs, Flash video, and other formats. As for support, few programs of any sort can match VLC's Help files and wikis, and its dedicated community of users, forums and other online resources.

From myriad file types to playlists to codecs and video capture, if it's useful to have in a media player, VLC has probably got it or soon will. VLC plays everything: if there's a media file it can't play but should, just ask!

"Be very careful what you download...."

July 29, 2013  |  By eetterrific

 |  Version: VLC Media Player 2.0.7

Pros

Get the real version

Cons

If you download the "sponsored" link, you get a load of crapware. Some of which will be caught as viruses.

C'mon CNET, make sure your "sponsored" links follow some rules. I spent a couple hours getting rid of...six or seven products. And who knows what they got off my PC.

Summary

The standard download is ok...the "sponsored link" is garbage.

"versatile yet oddly lackluster"

July 29, 2013  |  By gfrohring2

 |  Version: VLC Media Player 2.0.7

Pros

Plays just about anything
Very free

Cons

Bad "construction cone" icon
Relatively primitive interface

Summary

Decent program to play about any video format. This product only really suffers from minor cons (see above), but even for all of its versatility, it somehow has never been an app that i have fallen in love with. Still, it does its job without frills, but does it well.
Content with it, but always keeping my eyes open for something else (are you out there?) that really wows me in terms of video capabilities (i.e. more advanced playback control).

"Total life saver"

July 19, 2013  |  By Archangel035

 |  Version: VLC Media Player 2.0.7

Pros

I've had PC problems and tried numerous times to re-install my windows media player codec packs to no avail. This player plays almost everything. It's now my default player.

Cons

None so far. Plays almost anything and it's free!

Summary

I'm really enjoying it. Some of the extended features aren't so straight forward, but customizing is possible if you sniff around. Oh and you need to close the player for changes to take effect.

"Love it! Hate it!"

July 16, 2013  |  By Araha

 |  Version: VLC Media Player 2.0.7

Pros

Video play quality is good. Video clip can be cut with clarity as good as the original video. Plays almost anything that other players generally won't.

Cons

Does not play all files. Sometimes crashes causing the computer to go dead slow that is very irritating.
Sometimes the cut clips have distorting spots.

Summary

Once GOM was my default player which performed extremely well in the past. But now GOM has turned unfriendly, so I switched to VLC. If a clip is to be cut while a DVD or a VCD is playing, the cut clip quality is as clear as it is in its source. I compared the cuttings on VLC and Kates Video Toolkit using some DVDs and VCDs. VLC cut clip is of good clarity, but sometimes the clip has a distortion point or two in it. The clip cut from the same DVD/VCD by Kate's Toolkit does not have such distorting spots. However, Kate's clip clarity is not as that of VLC's. Certainly VLC is good for watching video files. If you wish to compile your choice clips onto a storing device, you may do that using VLC & Kates with some compromise in quality, as both lack the professional touch. Of course, you can't expect too much when you're getting them free.

July 11, 2013  |  By RHWoodman

 |  Version: VLC Media Player 2.0.7

Pros

Easy to install.
Easy to use (intuitive UI).
Excellent options.
No need to download and install additional codecs.
Free.

Cons

Needs more than a little tweaking for optimal playback quality (this is a minor problem, nothing major).

Summary

I would recommend this program to anyone looking for a solid media player and converter.
