VLC Media Player is a long-time open-source favorite, and the latest version is also the first to be out of beta development. It's not the only option for free video playback, but it's one of the best, and the feature updates in version 1 make it well worth the upgrade.
Users can now get frame-by-frame advancement, granular speed controls allowing for on-the-fly slower or faster playback, and live recording of streaming video. The toolbars are fully customizable, so you can have only the buttons you need in the interface, there's AirTunes streaming, and there's better integration in Gtk environments. Along with the improvements, VLC continues to offer robust support for a wide range of video and audio formats, including OGG, MP2, MP3, MP4, DivX, HD codecs like AES3, Raw Dirac, and even support for playing back zipped files. The default interface is still a stripped down player that belies VLC's functionality and features. Skinning can fix that quickly, but behavior can still be a bit unpredictable depending on the quality of the skin. VLC's open-source foundation and community ensures that it evolves quickly and often, with new features and fixes released frequently. Overall, VLC Media Player is a must-have application for its ability to open just about any type of video file you throw at it. Watch the CNET video review of VLC Media Player:

Version: VLC Media Player 1.0
"VLC Media Player-exactly what I've been looking for!"
Pros: No matter what type of video or audio file I want to play, VLC Media Player does it all. It has to be the most versatile media player I've tried to date, and I've tried many.
Cons: The only con I have is the unattractiveness. When you get the versatility of a media player like VLC, who cares what it looks like!

Version: VLC Media Player 1.0
Pros: Smoothest video playback out there.
Cons: It could be dressed-up a bit. It's a pretty plain-looking player.
Summary: When I finally got the program running (Something in the computer wouldn't let the program download and launch for some reason when I first downloaded it) it worked just as well as the previous version. It works much better than Quicktime Pro or an... read more >>

Version: VLC Media Player 1.0
Pros: It plays all of the possible codecs out there. I have a lot of videos that friends send me from various sources and in various formats. With this program, you simply play. No missing codecs, no security holes.
Cons: None that I know of.
Summary: Great program. Plays all the files you could want. Some cool features like changing aspect, crop, files with subtitles, increase volume to 200%. Check the program website for features. All in all a good program.

"Excellent Player - Plays my 5D MkII Video Files"
Pros: Great all around player. I like the fact that it plays my native Canon 5D MkII video files even better that Quicktime does.
Cons: Simple looking interface, nothing fancy - but hey, it works like a charm.
Summary: Give it a try.
