CNET Editors' review
When it comes to video files, nothing is ever as easy as it should be. Thankfully, VLC Media Player offers a one-stop solution for the file-format problem. The program supports playback of OGG, MP2, MP3, MP4, DivX, DVD, and a whole slew of other file types. In addition, it also can function as a streaming media server. Because of its open-source foundation, VLC Media Player evolves quickly, with new features and fixes released frequently.
Though the interface varies from platform to platform, the sparseness of the Windows version leaves plenty to be desired. The skinned mode perks things up slightly, but the program seems to suffer from unpredictable behavior when skinned. Also, the basic task of opening a file is far more confusing than it should be; the program gives you several options, including the head-scratching Quick Open File. Overall, though, VLC Media Player is a must-have application for its ability to open just about any type of video file you throw at it.
Watch the CNET video review of VLC Media Player:Publisher's Description
From VideoLAN Project:
VLC (initially VideoLAN Client) is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats, including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, MP3, and OGG, as well as for DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It also can be used as a server for unicast or multicast streams in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network. The most prominent additions to version 0.8.6 are probably Windows Media Video 9 and Flash Video. Other important changes are improved H.264 decoding, better Windows Unicode support, and a full-screen.
Version 0.8.6f may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.

"You can't beat something that plays everything for free"
Version: VLC Media Player 0.8.6f
Pros
The best thing about this software is that you don't need to download any extra codecs (I don't really know what they are but media programs always seem to ask for them to be downloaded) to play virtually any type of media file. You load it and it works. You can play DVD files just by right clicking on the main folder and selecting "play with VLC". Old avi files? No problem. You have a true all in one media player for free, no share-ware bull, or expirations, no pain in the butt reminders begging for money like how those other money hungry program houses will pull on you and no ad-ware constantly popping up on the sides of the program. This is what good programming and freedom is all about.
Cons
No weaknesses. For freeware this is the best player out there and often beats the proprietary software companies are putting out.

"Plays lots of formats, but has some problems"
Version: VLC Media Player 0.8.6f
Pros
can play lots of files, as said, good playback in general
Cons
when i go to full screen, in any method (double click on the video, menu zoom-->full screen) the video goes full screen, but the player window stays on the screen, but blank. so the video is full screen, with a random blank window in the middle of it. also, after i switched the playlist to "repeat all", often when i would attempt to double click on another file from anywhere, it would just restart the file it was already playing and i could only remedy this by closing the program and THEN playing the new file. also, i would like there to be a context menu added to the file explorer when selected individual files, not folders. what i mean is, currently, the only right click option to add to the playlist that is there is when you right click on a FOLDER, but not on individual files.
so for freeware, it's ok, but not great, hence the three star rating.

Version: VLC Media Player 0.8.6f
Pros
I was told to get this by a friend as it plays almost any media (music or video) file known to man, and I'm glad to say; he was correct.
This handy little device takes up very little RAM compared to the other media players on the market.
I plan to be using this for quite some while.
Cons
Sometimes takes time to open certain files.
