When it comes to video files, nothing is ever as easy as it should be. Thankfully, VLC Media Player offers a one-stop solution for the file-format problem. The program supports playback of OGG, MP2, MP3, MP4, DivX, DVD, and a whole slew of other file types. In addition, it also can function as a streaming media server. Because of its open-source foundation, VLC Media Player evolves quickly, with new features and fixes released frequently.
Though the interface varies from platform to platform, the sparseness of the Windows version leaves plenty to be desired. The skinned mode perks things up slightly, but the program seems to suffer from unpredictable behavior when skinned. Also, the basic task of opening a file is far more confusing than it should be; the program gives you several options, including the head-scratching Quick Open File. Overall, though, VLC Media Player is a must-have application for its ability to open just about any type of video file you throw at it.
Watch the CNET video review of VLC Media Player:
Publisher's description
From VideoLAN Project :VLC (initially VideoLAN Client) is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats, including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, MP3, and OGG, as well as for DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It also can be used as a server for unicast or multicast streams in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.
The most prominent additions to version 0.8.6 are probably Windows Media Video 9 and Flash Video. Other important changes are improved H.264 decoding, better Windows Unicode support, and a full-screen. Version 0.8.6e is a bug fixing release.

Version: VLC Media Player 0.8.6e
"Just what you need and easy."

Version: VLC Media Player 0.8.6e
Pros: Not as good looking as WMP, it could be intimidating if you want to go advance but like any open source program it just keep better and better at what it does.
Impressive rock solid software and nothing to envy to the quality of other player outside of the esthetic.
A must have player that will complete your video experience.
Cons: You need to be well vers in the software if you want to use the advance feature as the help section is quite silent about how to do this.

Version: VLC Media Player 0.8.6e
"A media powerhouse....Just Don't judge it by looks."
Pros: The default interface for the player is not the best...But is usable makes up for it. It supports near every codec known on the internet and will likely replace any other media player you have on your computer.
If you would like to replace Quicktime, a DVD program and Windows Media-player with one simple program that does it all...Look no further.
As an added bonus.....this thing even plays DVDs.
Cons: The default skin screams Windows 95. But its simple and it works.
If it really annoys you however, you can download more skins on the internet.

Version: VLC Media Player 0.8.6e
Pros: This small player will play most formats you throw at it without so much as a hiccup. Admittedly its interface isn't pretty; but I open VLC to watch a movies not to look at the interface.
Cons: Advanced options not very user-friendly, but then again I've never had occasion where messing with them was necessary. I would like it to play .rm and other real player files, but nothing is perfect and Real Alternative works fine for those files you just can't get to work with VLC.
