UnThreat Free AntiVirus 2012 is a free antivirus software solution from AVSoftware. It uses the popular, well-received VIPRE antivirus engine, and offers basic protection from viruses, Trojans, rootkits, malware, adware, and other threats, including e-mail protection and antispyware protection. UnThreat Free is based on a premium tool that includes a firewall and other extra features. The freeware omits those and other bells and whistles, and it doesn't need them. Its chief recommendation is the VIPRE engine, which has tested well against a variety of threats and has generally been available only in premium AV software, until now.

When our download finished, we disabled our existing antivirus software before installing UnThreat. Some freeware AV tools will work alongside the competition, and some won't. As with many other AV tools, UnThreat's installation process requires a reboot. A simple, well-designed user interface more or less says "antivirus software," and the only thing notable is the grayed-out entries for the disabled features: Firewall, RoadWarrior, and Web Guard. We started with the Quick Scan, which turned up two low-risk adware bundlers. Clicking View Details confirmed that the items weren't a threat, but we sent them to their doom by selecting Delete from a drop-down menu and pressing the Clean button. In addition to the Scan field, we could view our Scan History and Active Protection History and access the Quarantine Manager. Of course, no AV solution worth its name would omit a system tray icon, and UnThreat doesn't. The tray icon's menu let us disable UnThreat's active protection, check for updates, and start scans. A tree-based Settings sheet offered a surprising number of options, including scheduling, proxy settings for updates, shell extension scans, and excluded files and folders. The Help file is extensive and detailed.

Free antivirus solutions have gotten so good that the premium tools have to offer tons of extras to justify the cost. The popular free versions tend to be safe choices, and safe recommendations, too, thanks to instantly updated threat lists that millions of users rely on. With no-nonsense controls, essential features, and strong protection, UnThreat Free AntiVirus 2012 joins their ranks.

    "This is great!"

    July 08, 2014   |   By ronscouch

Version: UnThreat Free AntiVirus 2013 6.2.37

    Pros

Very easy to download, install and use the settings, much easier than the other three programs I've tried.

    Cons

None yet, but I've only had this program a few days now.

    Summary

I highly recommend this antivirus program over the others for several reasons, the main ones are: the ease of installation, no annoying pop-ups to sell you more products and the scans seem faster.

"Claim of email checking is misleading."

    June 28, 2014   |   By sparato

Version: UnThreat Free AntiVirus 2013 6.2.37

    Pros

It works, but read the Cons.

    Cons

Claims to check email in/out but it only does it for MS Outlook. So that feature does not work for any other email client.
The software keeps updated several times every day, this couses computer to halt or slow down while the update is downloaded. This is annoying. No need to have so frequent updates.
Their support email replies tend to be too terse.
Right now I am looking for another antivirus!

    Summary

    Can't recommend!

    "MISREPRESENTED. It doesn't STAY FREE."

    May 23, 2014

Version: UnThreat Free AntiVirus 2013 6.2.37

    Pros

Software seems to do what is is supposed to do.

    Cons

    1. When installed from publishers site, maxed out CPU and for almost 30 minutes failed to respond to the keyboard including ctrl-alt-del.

    2. when install completed, it had automatically update, and converted "free" to 30 day free trial of full version.

    3. After removing all obvious traces with REVO, the 2014 "free" was downloaded and installed from a download site, and the full signature file was downloaded from the publisher. With network connections disabled, I installed and updated offline using the full signature file, and disabled auto update. The version with current signature was shown as "free" until the next day, when the SW AUTOMATICALLY UPDATED the signature file. After the next reboot, the SW was shown as the 30 day FREE TRIAL.

    Summary

If you want a truly free AV package, and your OS is supported, Comodo has better, truly free AV, firewall and anti-malware apps.

"Would rate a Zero if I could"

    May 21, 2014   |   By galet09

Version: UnThreat Free AntiVirus 2013 6.2.37

    Pros

There are no pros at all except that it is free.

    Cons

One of the worst piece of crap anti-virus progs I've tried. I was trying to find something better than Panda another one which is crap. Anyway UV Threat installed and said it was downloading or updating the definitions then.

Progress bar after a few min. said 100% complete yet it just hung and hung and sat there etc. When I looked at the menu program in front of me there was a red flag by definitions which said no definitions found!

Looking in their folder there were none. So I stopped the update. Then more problems trying to close it out of the taskbar. You can't. Someone said Panda was difficult to uninstall. I uninstalled that one fine, but this one just was not that easy to even get to where you COULD uninstall it.

Just an unresponsive computer trying to do anything. I finally after so much more that happened that there isn't enough space to inform people of, I was able finally to uninstall it.

    Summary

If you have an older computer like mine (10 yrs old) and are running Windows XP SP2 I would seriously stay away from this program.

    "lightest antivirus ... but"

    March 10, 2014   |   By ChoiceVoice

Version: UnThreat Free AntiVirus 2013 6.2.37

    Pros

-uses vipre engine and definitions (which are pretty good).
    -email scanner
    -hips
-by far, the lightest antivirus out there (it's 10x lighter than avast) and is a true netbook saver.
-contrary to others, it was an easy clean uninstall.

    Cons

-i don't like the updater - i download the free version, then went to update definitions ... and if online installer burps, it turns your install into the 30 day trial. it burped on me 3x. also has an upgrade button on bottom - don't touch it or you'll get the 30 day trial. this is a deal breaker. with 2013, it was far lighter than anyone else, until auto updater would check for updates, and my netbook would freeze up until it was done. i hoped 2014 had fixed this, but it kept giving me 30 day trial by mistake. so i gave up. if anyone else tries, and waits to end of 30 day trial, let us know if it reverts to free if you don't pay:)

    Summary

2014 is available on their site. best to download the newest.

if you can get past the undater issues, it is by far the lightest on system resources (well, webroot is lighter, but it isn't free). this would easily be a 5 star if they fixed this. when you unistall it, a web page opens asking why, tell them and maybe they'll fix it?

    Updated on Mar 10, 2014

forgot to mention: i use Wise Care 365 Free, and it can monitor your bootup to tell you how long it takes. mine takes 53 seconds normally. i installed unthreat, rebooted, and it took 54 seconds. apparently it only added 1 second to by boot. that is remarkable for an antivirus.

    "Shyster business tactics"

    November 24, 2013   |   By ZipWayKid

Version: UnThreat Free AntiVirus 2013 6.2.37

    Pros

So-So ops , but missed several things that took Sophus and Hitman Pro to fix

    Cons

Is NOT FREE - Several days after install received error note that system not covered; Check for up-dates. Did so and informed NO up-dates available; Noted that system had not been updated automatically since 11/9/13. Have checked with Unthreat on this occurance before with NO response.
Therefore, apparently Unthreat is NOT free but Free TRIAL, for which Unthreat holds you hostage to update from free - This has been noted before by previous client and CNET has done nothing since

    Summary

Shyster B/S that Cnet chooses to ignore or look the other way about.

    "Is this free or not??"

    November 13, 2013   |   By roastbeans

Version: UnThreat Free AntiVirus 2013 6.2.37

    Pros

It caught a couple of spywares that Malwarebytes missed.

    Cons

Its not free.Only a few days after I downloaded the program I got a message saying my free trial expired, and can't use it anymore unless I purchase the program??

    Summary

I was very impressed of this program that it caught a spyware lurking on my flash player which had giving me problem. And I would definitely have considered purchasing the program, but their business practice,as I stated above seem shady and can't trust the company.

    Updated on Nov 13, 2013

I wish the CNET staffs would clarify the programs people put on their web sites as FREE.FREE TRIAL,OR PURCHASE TO USE!
