A reliable compression tool for folks wanting an alternative to WinZip, TurboZip is user friendly and easy to master. (Warning: You must provide some minimal personal information to register the tool before it will install.) The TurboZip interface has a familiar three-paned appearance similar to that of e-mail programs like Microsoft Outlook.
One pane lists the archives you've created; the second pane reveals a list of the files in the archive you select; and the third pane displays the contents of the file you choose, much like a preview pane. A wizard leads you through creating an archive, which you can save in a variety of formats including ZIP, RAR, and self-extracting EXE files, so even novices will have no difficulties. The utility performed well in our tests. Although TurboZip offered different compression levels, there was little file size difference in the resulting archives, no matter which level we used.
However, even the default compression setting for TurboZip (midway between highest and lowest) created an archive smaller than WinZip's maximum level of compression, and smaller is better in zip utilities. Any level of user will find TurboZip a handy and simple compression program to add to their system's toolbox.
Publisher's description
From FileStream :TurboZIP provides seamless zipping, unzipping, encoding, and decoding features. It opens all major archive and e-mail attachment formats, including ZIP; Java Archive (JAR); CAB, ARJ, and LHA (LZH) archives; self-extracting files (EXE); Unix Z archives (GZ, TAZ, TGZ, Z); Unix TAR archives; UU-encoded e-mail (UUE, UU); MIME e-mail (MME, MIM, B64); Mac BinHex (BHX, HQX); Outlook (MSG); and Outlook Express (EML). It also creates popular archive and e-mail files, including ZIP, Java Archive (JAR), ARJ, and LHA (LZH) archives, UU-encoded e-mail (UUE) files, and self-extracting (EXE) files.
You can also conveniently search, view, print, and launch files within ZIP and e-mail files without unzipping or decoding. There are more than 100 built-in proprietary viewers, and ActiveX control features are also provided. In addition, TurboZIP's Auto Backup module compresses files on your hard drive or removable media in the ZIP format to safeguard your work and conserve disk space. TurboZIP allows for simultaneous archiving operations such as multiple zipping, unzipping, and auto backup. Other features include autodetect, to identify the contents of the archive or e-mail; autorename files, for use in extraction with new version numbers; and a new Extract All menu to enhance extraction speed.
Version 5.0 features encryption; multivolume spanning to hard disk, removable disk, or network; ANSI name support for international characters; file filters; wildcards; UNC (Universal Naming Convention) support and UNC ZIP Set support; and more. The TurboZIP autobackup now also supports multivolume to hard disk.
