CNET Editors' review
As is the case with any machine, computers require regular maintenance to keep them running their best. Tuneup Utilities 2013 is a suite of tools for fixing, tidying, and optimizing your computer. With a straightforward interface and plenty of options, it's worth checking out if you're not sure how to keep your machine in top condition.
Tuneup Utilities 2013 has a 1-Click Maintenance tool for users who want to get everything taken care of at once, as well as several other options that give you more control over what the program does. Tuneup Utilities started by performing an analysis of our system, looking at a variety of different performance metrics. It determined that we needed to clean our Registry, remove broken shortcuts, clean up Windows and programs, clean up our browser, and optimize system startup and shutdown; it also let us know that our Registry didn't need to be defragmented but that we should defragment our hard drive during our next maintenance session. Tuneup found quite a few problems on our computer and asserted that we had "high system interference." With the click of a button we were able to solve these problems, or so the program says; the only real evidence we had was that it told us that 867 Registry problems had been corrected, 58 broken shortcuts had been removed, 275 unneeded items had been deleted, and so on. We hadn't been having any significant performance problems to begin with, so it's hard to say whether Tuneup made a noticeable difference for us, but we can at least say that it didn't cause any problems. An addition to the 1- Click Maintenance tool, Tuneup Utilities also lets users create PC usage profiles to determine how best to optimize their systems, and a System Protection feature lets users undo changes made by the program -- always a good thing when you're mucking around in the Registry. Tuneup Utilities has a user-friendly interface and a thorough built-in Help file. Overall, we think that Tuneup Utilities 2013 is a good choice for novice and intermediate users who understand the importance of system maintenance but need some assistance in performing it.
Tuneup Utilities 2013 has a 15-day free trial. It installs and uninstalls without issues.
Editors' note: This is a review of the trial version of Tuneup Utilities 2013 13.0.2020.14.

"VERY USEFUL, IF YOU KNOW HOW TO CONFIGURE IT PROPERLY.."
Version: TuneUp Utilities 2013 13.0.2020.14
Pros
I like the array of options that comes with Tune-Up Utilities 2013. The interface is user-friendly (though could still use a little work) and the 1-Click Maintenance feature offers real streamlined cleaning capabilities.
Cons
Some of the functions and configurations (even within the "usage-profile" settings could use better mouse-over descriptions to aid the user to make the right choice when deciding whether or not to let the program make the adjustments based on your profile.
It could also use more definitive cleaning options that are also specific in their cleaning descriptions (i.e., when you want to clean out the junk from a recent browser session but don't want to delete your browser's book-mark favicon cache---the currents options are not very clear and most of the time I end up having to reload all my bookmarks because I don't know which option to un-check).
Maybe Tune-up Utilities should recreate the cache cleaners so that they don't touch the favicon cache---seems like that would be a reasonable tweak to apply to this seemingly hefty application.Summary
Although it may seem a bit cumbersome to the average end-user and can use a tremendous amount of system-resources, if you know how to configure the settings correctly, it just may be a useful investment for keeping your computer in decent-running shape.
For those who may have experienced issues with the "Automatic Maintenance" & "Optimizer" functions---they can be disabled from within the settings menu---you just have to know where to look.
Personally, I like to make use of this application on demand rather than to have the maintenance set to automatic but you can create a user profile and still disable the automatic optimizations whilst still getting some good on-demand functionality out of it. And at the same time you'll reduce the amount of system resources this application normally would need if you just simply had everything set to run automatically.
(Just some food for thought for those whom may feel less inclined to tweak an application such as this because of their ineptitude with regard to software in general.)
Overall, I think this application is a great tool for Windows users and boasts an incredible amount of configurations, however the in-experienced should proceed with caution.
Remember an application can be your best friend or your worst enemy. The choice is up to you.
As a general rule, if you don't know what you are doing---then prudence holds that you shouldn't follow through, otherwise you'll be certain to run into issues great & small...

"Communications conflicts"
Version: TuneUp Utilities 2013 13.0.2020.14
Pros
Improves performance to some extent
cleans junk from internet browsersCons
not specific enough about what it is disabling
causes wireless connection conflict
needs to identify other apps that it might conflict with
disables apps you know work but that it replaces
does not offer options to keep other apps running
requires internet accessSummary
I would first be cautious about using this application because it might replace a good application just because it wants to. It does not fix problems that it causes like wireless connection disruption.
Needs to cover specific areas of computer applications, firewalls, anti-virus, anti-malware, internet connection types, exactly what it is cleaning, disabling or stopping a service. If it must have internet access then it should begin there with possible fixes or changes to network or internet connections. -
"Decent software- Talks/shows more than it does?"
Version: TuneUp Utilities 2013 13.0.2020.14
Pros
-Simple to understand.
-Lots of options for cleaning and fixing your computer.Cons
-Not free forever.(trial version)
-Difficult to remove everything (e.g. shortcuts, registry errors).
-Decent, Not brilliant.
-If anything, puts more junk in the system.Summary
I personally would' nt recommend TuneUp Utilities 2013 to many. It seems good at first but it can be a real hassle! You could consider buying the full version... but I doubt you should. It talks more than it can perform and doesn't make any major changes to your computer performance.
This software is probably best for laptop users who may be interested. -
"A Powerful & Thorough Windows Tuner!"
Version: TuneUp Utilities 2013 13.0.2020.14
Pros
I really like this product. As with ALL registry cleaners, please use them only after you've taken 2 Precautions:: You've backed up your Registry & you regularly do Full System Backups; (Yes, I know you already do that ... just making sure :) ). This product is very competitive & Very Similar to the Also-Excellent System Mechanic by Iolo. Both products have About the same tool-set. One of the interesting distinctions offered by Tune-Up is the means to _Automatically_ Disable selected High-Load Background Services when they're not being used . . . While you could manually do that by opening Windows Services, it's really convenient to have this done automatically.
Cons
Frustratingly, the F1 Help Function FAILS !! Arrrgh!! Fortunately, you can grab a (Less-Convenient) PDF Manual from the Tune-Up Website. I emailed Tune-Up Support about this Failure & they advised that I do a Complete Uninstall & Reinstall of their product. I did that (even though it meant redoing all of the many product settings). And, Once Again, the Help File ... FAILED !!
Summary
There are 3 All-in-One Toolkits on the market that I have tested to be Excellent -- CCleaner (Free!), Tune-Up Utilities, & Iolo System Mechanic . . . CCleaner is Super-Safe -- & the Latter 2 are More Thorough & Offer a Vast Array of Tools. A strength of "Tune-Up" is that it really truly assists you to discover which programs are causing the greatest Load on your computer. I really wish they would fix the problem with their HELP FILE -- That was Very Frustrating!

"Who watches the watcher ?"
Version: TuneUp Utilities 2013 13.0.2020.14
Pros
Very easy to use Tue Up..basically run and forget ...mostly.Does everything it says on the can. I was offered a much reduced price offer to upgrade fron 2012 to 2013 for 3 PC's so dedide to do so.
Cons
Having run Advanced System Care 6 Pro I was a tad suprised to find that TU2013 found issues. However pressed repair and seemingly those problems were corrected. What began to cause me concern was that a pop up would appear indicating that a program had been been given a reduced prioity to speed up my PC. This included Firefox and my Armour Firewall. Swtched ASC6 Pro back on having removed this prog.
Summary
This prog has a lot of bells and whistles seemingly to make your PC go faster. I am unable to say that was the case but equally the wheels did not fall off. Do not like the "we have reduced etc" although if you are fast enough you can catch the pop up..however I was not so !

"Very Powerful - But to near taking ownership"
Version: TuneUp Utilities 2013 13.0.2020.14
Pros
it's potential and powerful modification/tweaking methods are among the elite best.
Cons
Consider this: You know an aspect of your system is important to you, knowing you absolutely need it working at full tilt and this software disagrees, your gonna have problems.
For ANY experienced user, the take-over/control of your system from start-up is really overbearing. And minimizing the impact without just turning off whole optimizations is not possible.Summary
The power of this software has truly evolved and stands above most others. One of it's main problems is that whoever programmed this thinks they're collective ideas are right for everybody. And needless to say what others said already is certain.
For power users that know what your doing, do your own tweaks where you can and rule your world, your machine. For novices or non technical oriented individuals that get bogged down systems, this would likely be their magic pill. -
"A pain in the back side"
Version: TuneUp Utilities 2013 13.0.2020.14
Pros
None that I know of.
Cons
Lacks transparency.
Summary
Try the excellent range of freeware, like Ccleaner, instead

"Over-bearing software with average results at best"
Version: TuneUp Utilities 2013 13.0.2020.14
Pros
The user-interface is pretty straight forward and there are some nice 'fixes' with the program.
Cons
When installed, this program will do everything it can to root into your system and it's a nightmare trying to disable or turn it off! Tuneup sometimes consumes almost double the computer resources of my Norton antivirus! Tuneup also has THE ABSOLUTE WORST customer service mentality! For instance, if you purchase Tuneup Utilities at almost all major retailers right now, it will be the 2012 version, which doesn't have a year on the box. I recently purchased the 2012 boxed software and learning after installing it that 2013 was out and had more features. When I emailed Tuneup because their phone support is nonexistent they responded, "Please note that we are not responsible for retailers about what version they are selling."
Summary
There are better and more stable utility management programs out there that are at or below the high cost of Tuneup that actually have customer service! Be aware that Tuneup wants to rip you off on their site charging $50.00 for a download, when most of the major retailers are selling you a boxed version for half the price!

"Good program; incessantly bothersome."
Version: TuneUp Utilities 2013 13.0.2020.14
Pros
Decent program, various handy one-click solutions, many customizations.
Cons
By far the most persistently annoying program I have ever used. I am on a laptop and this thing makes itself known every time I plug and unplug my charger. Constantly switching from Economy mode to Standard. You can't shut it off. Plus, you cannot close the program normally. Lame. I'll stick to ASC6.
Summary
From love to loathe in two weeks.
