To call TuneUp Utilities 2009 useful would drastically understate the situation. The app provides users with a powerful, well-designed utility that accesses the entire Windows maintenance tool set and more in a fast, organized, and easy-to-use series of connected modules.

Temp file management, registry cleaners and start-up program controls are the bread-and-butter of these utilities, and these basics work in TuneUp more quickly and easily than most. However, the app also sports great add-on tools you don't usually see in a utility program. It offers a variety of Internet and program-acceleration tweaks as well as Windows performance enhancers. The crash-preventing MemOptimizer, a file shredder, deleted file recovery, and a respectable uninstall utility round out the suite. You even can automate maintenance tasks with the scheduler or tweak Windows' appearance with the styler tool. The built-in RescueCenter can restore all changes completely or one by one.

The system-analyzing wizard, with its thorough reporting and upgrade suggestions, is worth the program price alone. Between the guts of steel and the stylish, logically arranged interface, TuneUp Utilities suits all users--from complete beginners who will appreciate the one-click optimization to more daring users who will experiment with all the settings.

"Pathetic customer service"

September 13, 2011  |  By noewil

 |  Version: TuneUp Utilities 2011 10.0.2020.9

Pros

No pro's as it freezes - extremely dissapointed

Cons

PC with Windows 7 - runs the registry cleaning and then freezes. Having paid for a supposedly good product one would expect a response from technical support. 3 emails and 2 weeks later still no response except for acknowledgement of email request!

Summary

Non-existent technical support - once you have paid for the product, do not expect assistance wen things go wrong - steer clear of it!

"Poor price to value ratio"

January 31, 2011  |  By chuck50954

 |  Version: TuneUp Utilities 2011 10.0.2020.9

Pros

It cleans up your computer's files; it has clever but inessential enhancements for your UI. Your computer may very well run faster.

Cons

Many of the features of TUU are available online for free or at least for less money than the $40+ TUU charges. TUU has gone to a yearly product upgrade cycle, which means the version you buy will only receive updates until the next cycle starts.

Summary

This is the 2nd time I've purchased TUU, but probably my last. The first version I purchased was good for a couple years of updates and upgrades. Then sometime in the last year or so, about 2009 I think, TUU went to this falsely accelerated lifecycle for the product, forcing users who want updated or upgraded software to purchase a new license each year.

For instance, I purchased TUU 2010 in late May 2010, and by November, whenever I would do a check for updates, TUU would auto-take me to their sales page, opening a browser window in the process. No updates are made available - you only get badgered to buy more software.

I contacted TUU about the 6-month lifespan of my product, and they were quite content to let me know that the only way I would qualify for a free upgrade was if I had purchased my software after August 2010. So there you go, TUU itself says that you can expect as few as 3 or as many as 12 months from a license. The cycle appears to begin in August of each year. Customer service is nonexistent and mostly in German, or at least it was for me.

So now I have TUU 2010, and every time it tries to auto-update, I get hijacked to a TUU webpage urging me to buy the new product, less than a year after my original purchase, and TUU says this is just peachy so far as they're concerned.

Do your pocketbook a favor - check out the free version of TUU, learn what it does, then go hunting for free versions of the utilties you like most.

This software helps your computer run faster by tweaking startup menus, cleaning out caches, defragging, etc. It also has a turbo mode that shuts down some programs in the background to give your computer a bit more resources. And it has some groovy tweaks to the user interface, which is to say, icons and desktop backgrounds and such.

"I Only use TuneUp Styler"

January 21, 2011  |  By xmizer

Cons

None (at least for styling).

"Fantastic. I bought it."

January 20, 2011  |  By curious67

 |  Version: TuneUp Utilities 2011 10.0.2020.9

Pros

The turbo mode saved me from buying a new computer. Just made my computer so much faster.

Cons

None for me.
Of course, i am worried about other people's reports of crashing their system. But that is not my observation.

Summary

Testing the new feature of disabling programs instead of uninstalling them. Very promising for people like me who don't dare to uninstall programs because they might want to use in once in a life time.

"Totally useless on Win7"

January 18, 2011  |  By Yowanvista

 |  Version: TuneUp Utilities 2011 10.0.2020.9

Pros

None, it useless

Cons

Piece of crap that can cause BSODs an wreck your OS

Summary

Windows 7 is a totally different operating system than XP. Win 7 is not an evolution from XP. It is a totally new OS and even changed from Vista. Thus the wisdom we learned about XP - tweaking, cleaning, modifying for speed, etc - do not apply at all to Win 7. Forget that knowledge.

Windows is a closed source system. Developers of tuneup utilities and registry cleaners do not have the core code of Win 7 and are not working on definitive information, but rather they are going on past knowledge and experience, most of which is not applicable to Win 7. Automatic cleaners will usually have to do some guesswork.

There is almost no tweaking that can be done to Win 7 to speed it up. The system is designed to diagnose itself and take care of itself which it does remarkably well. Win 7 maintains itself and that includes the registry.

Tuneup utilities are pure snake oil. At best they do nothing except use resources. At worst, they can mess your system up, slowing it down, and even crash it. There is no tuneup utility out there anywhere that can speed Win 7 up and improve its performance, at least not at this time.

This isn't to say that the system does not need to be maintained. Uninstall programs that you don't use, delete unneeded and unnecessary files. Defrag your hard drive. But don't screw with the registry unless you are an in depth expert in the Win 7 registry.

We have seen the adverse effects of tuneup utilities and registry cleaners and registry defraggers in the Crashes and Debugging Section. Most of the time, the cure is a clean install. Using a program such as Ccleaner is fine to get rid of old and unnecessary files. A tuneup utility is not only unneeded, it can actually harm your system. Don't use them.

"Not bad, but not good"

January 17, 2011  |  By BugattiVeyron41

 |  Version: TuneUp Utilities 2011 10.0.2020.9

Pros

The length of the trial version. 15 days is quite good.

Cons

It is really expensive. £40 for something that deletes files on your computer?

Summary

I have to say that I disagree with anyone that says this is the best. I think AVG PC Tuneup is better because it has a better interface and it doesn't delete files that you need. Plus it is cheaper.
