Though sufficiently simple to use, this compact ring-tone program is tone-deaf to the needs of more experienced users. ToneThis lets you download songs or clips of songs as well as images to your cell phone through the Internet. The basic interface allows you to browse files for digital audio files or images, then quickly uploads them to the program. For music, you can choose a portion of a song (represented as a wave form) and then download it to your cell phone. Images work the same way. Yet we're disappointed that outside of "clipping" audio tracks, ToneThis offers no editing tools. What's more, be sure your cell phone is WAP-enabled; all files are transmitted over the Internet, rather than uploaded via cable. ToneThis also works with many operators and in many countries, but not all--be sure to test the software before you buy. Our biggest disappointment was the program's trial limitations; with only one upload allowed, it's impossible to test both the audio and image capabilities of the software. Overall, this program should suffice for beginners looking to clip and download the intros to their favorite songs. Watch the CNET video review of ToneThis:

"Very slick and easy to use and FUN!"
Pros: Very easy to use, but check the help file for some info that will help you to download your music. The sound quality is surprisingly good and I had fun picking the clips that I wanted. You could use part of the guitar solo from 'Smoke on the Water' or Donna Summer's 'Love to Love You Baby' for example.
Cons: May be a bit difficult for some users to figure out how to get their ring tones to download. You must subscribe to your phone company's email service. Clips are limited to 100k so use a MP3 to get the most from your clip.
