Editors note: This review was modified from the original to reflect changes in the publishers description of the product as a complementary rather than standalone package.

Called CyberHawk under its previous owners, PC Tools' ThreatFire is a useful program but only in limited situations. It offers real-time prevention of virus and malware infections by identifying suspicious behaviors ("zero-day" events) as they happen, before malicious code installs itself on your PC. However, ThreatFire does not offer an on-demand scan for viruses already on your computer, though it will perform an on-demand scan for other malware. The name says "antivirus", but if you're looking for an all-in-one on-demand bug killer we recommend looking for a product that includes both on-demand virus scanning and real-time protection.

ThreatFire does do some things very well. The software real-time protection didn't noticeably slow down our Windows Vista computer, and the customizable advanced settings were excellent. Users can pick and choose their preferred trusted processes and create rules for detection, such as scanning for SCR files created by an email client. You can also avail yourself of the scheduler, and create a system restore point before moving threats into quarantine.

However, once installed, ThreatFire is difficult to remove from your startup routine without uninstalling it. The absence of on-demand virus scanning means that this app is best used in conjunction with a program that offers on-demand virus detection and removal. While ThreatFire offers some compelling features, competing freeware security programs provide a more comprehensive combination of real-time and on-demand virus scanning.

"Threatfire is an absolute NO!"

March 08, 2010

 |  Version: ThreatFire AntiVirus Free Edition 4.6

Pros

Detected many of zero-day threats that I threw at it.

Cons

It messes up Internet Explorer's pop up blocker, it slows down internet speeds, and when I tried to uninstall it, it currupted my OS (vista), and I had to reformat!

Summary

PC Tools, you have made an excellent product. Just fix the bugs I listed above, and you're set to go.

"Software great before attempted installation of update"

November 29, 2009  |  By 1jim2cole3

 |  Version: ThreatFire AntiVirus Free Edition 4.6

Pros

It was a great backstop for my other antivirus software, often thwarting viruses before the others caught them and sometimes catching the nasty things with no reaction from the other apps.

Cons

The attempted installation of the update via CNET was an unequivical disaster. It started out benignly enough but went from bad to much, much worse -- to the point where I now have no Threatfire on my computer and can't reinstall it.

Summary

I started out the update installation as per the instructions on the site on CNET, but then got a notification box telling me that the previous installation of Threatfire had to be uninstalled before the update could be installed. I should have stopped there; at least I would still have had Threatfire on my machine.
I uninstalled the old Threatfire and began again the installation of the update, only to get that same notification box with the same wording.
I searched for any leftover pieces of Threatfire and got rid of the ones I found, then started over with the update installation -- same notification box with the same instruction.
This went on for several attempts, all of which had the same result.
As a result of this I now do not have any application of Threatfire on my computer and seemingly have no way of getting one installed.

"Nice idea. Nasty vendor."

November 22, 2009  |  By blancheirving

 |  Version: ThreatFire AntiVirus Free Edition 4.6

Pros

Free. Apparently a 'global-group-connected' type of thing, which is interesting.

Cons

Program seems to have a will of its own - does scans when it feels like it rather than as you've scheduled. Strong-arm tactics to get you to upgrade (i.e., pay).

Summary

As Cnet editors wrote, "ThreatFire is difficult to remove from your startup routine without uninstalling it." Maybe my complaint is a little different, but I find it does not merely launch with Windows and sit in the tray observing. Nor does it update itself at startup and then become quiet. It performs its scan - and regardless of claims, its scans slow my computer to a crawl. This startup scan (never mentioned in ThreatFire literature or screens as far as I can tell) occurs despite my scheduling a daily scan for much later in every day. Sorry, when I start my computer I do not want to then wait for 15 minutes while a scan I didn't ask for makes it impossible to do anything else. There is no email, web chat, or phone support unless you pay. And the posted FAQ are of no help. I do not like this company.

"Will it ever end !!!!"

October 20, 2009  |  By Bazerkerhawaiian

 |  Version: ThreatFire AntiVirus Free Edition 4.6

Pros

I think is could be a good buffer if you run compatible software..

Cons

Attacked my security suite (Kaspersky) And wants to take a few things on the uninstall.. Ever watch the Jerk..

Summary

I was a big fan of Pc Tools 5yrs back when they had it together.. Threat fire is like a buffer between malware/virus protection that is supposed to play nice with your antivirus already running. I found parts of my security suite being closed down and one time the whole suite.. When checking logs in Threat Fire I noticed it did not only target my security suite, But also my network wifi card.. I was very impressed with the small foot print it made in the registry.. I think I removed three items at the most making PC Tools a very responsible software writer.. Hopefully the whinny little ******* who bash my other reviews about rouge software that make a mess out of your reg like Norton/Mc Afee and the list goes on,, Will understand what I was talking about.. I would recommend Threat Fire, But keep an eye on how it is playing with the rest of the kids in the sandbox..

"TROJAN! See Cons."

October 19, 2009  |  By buck76182

 |  Version: ThreatFire AntiVirus Free Edition 4.6

Pros

None. See Cons.

Cons

Warning--executable contains Trojan PSW.Banker5.ZOY.

Summary

Updated on Oct 19, 2009

Further research indicates that the trojan may be the result of a false positive by the AV software. I feel that it is fair to report that, but the jury is still out.

"Seems a worthwhile program."

October 17, 2009  |  By firedfox

 |  Version: ThreatFire AntiVirus Free Edition 4.6

Pros

Threatfire is easy to use, and quick to set up.

Cons

It's hard to tell if Threatfire is working properly. I don't really know if my copy has helped protect me all that much.

Summary

Threatfire seems to do its job quietly in the background. It is hard to tell what benefits you are getting from it as it doesn't really show any signs of what it is doing for you.
