It would take a lot to overcome the painful installation, but The Ur-Quan Masters succeeds. After downloading and running the 1MB installer, we were subjected to another 180MB of downloading at 32K/sec., which took about an hour and a half on a corporate LAN. (To be fair, we did download the entire package.) Once the game was running, however, our frustrations vanished in a wondrous haze of retro space gaming. This first stable version of the open-source 3DO port of Star Control II is as fun to play as the original, which is saying a lot.
The graphics may look retro today, but the hybrid gameplay--a complicated mix of strategy, role-playing, and space combat--matches up with any current release. Every ship is different, so learning their strengths and weaknesses is essential. While you explore an immense galaxy in a free-form adventure, a well-integrated story ties in an epic saga of alien domination. Star Control II is one of the greatest PC games of all time, and if you've never tried it, The Ur-Quan Masters is mandatory.
Our advice: Skip the remixes, at least at first, which download much more slowly than the game itself. For maximum speed, you can skip speech and music altogether (but then you'll never know what "Mmrnmhrm" sounds like).
Publisher's description

Version: The Ur-Quan Masters 0.4
"brilliant game, with lots of FUN."
Pros: I have no idea what is in the extra files of the download since I installed it very basic, and it took 5 or so minutes, please people with dsl and cable if you think it is taking too long then just move on and dont even bother reviewing this game. Download would take long if you choose the other options which I am guessing are great, but I just wanted to play the game. so let us talk about the gaem: -----it is not a game of graphics so dont bet on good ones, it is a game of strategy options and aliances. ---- For first time players I will give you this hint: there is a red stars southwest of the solar system (alpha centauri), you will find a probe there, he will give alot of information and technology that you will need. Also DO NOT KILL THE WOLF MAN. I made that mistake and had to play the game over again, he is actualy very important for you. ----- now we are done with the hints I still have not finished the game, but it is not about fighting and meeting alien races, some alien races if not all will give you clues of things you are supposed to find, some will not give clues untill you find something out for them.. etc.. so the game ends up multi dimensional.---- I am not sure about the possibilities of winning this game if you did things differently, since you will be able to accomplish certain thing in two ways. --- It is a brilliant and complex game I must say, just download the thing when you go to bed and you will have it ready the next morning if that does not work just download a smaller part of the game.
Cons: Two things:
1- Saving a game:
I wish you would be able to name the saved game as well, at the moment this seems to be impossible which leads to confusion later on.
2- the idea of creating zip archives of the file versions seems to be a good one, I hope someone implements this soon.

Version: The Ur-Quan Masters 0.4
Pros: I downloaded this game a few weeks ago and beat it recently, and in my opinion, this game is awesome. It's a lot of fun to play, and the humor is very witty. To be honest, I laughed several times during the game.
Cons: The game can be pretty difficult for first timers, but the official Wiki is basically a player's guide, which is extremely helpful.

"a classic game to take with you if stranded on a deserted island"
Pros: - thrilling, surprising, funny plot.
- awesome combats.
- can't afford to miss it!
Cons: - a relatively old game with moderate graphics, so 90s... (some would say that's a pro).

Version: The Ur-Quan Masters 0.4
Pros: This is a port of a truly classic game. If more developers would take the time to bring games such as this into the 21st century OS's, I'd spend less time maintaining an old 486 just for these games. Star Control II is not only the best of a trilogy of games, but it is one of the most enjoyable PC games of the 90's. Seeing these graphics for the first time in 10 years feels pretty great!
