It would take a lot to overcome the painful installation, but The Ur-Quan Masters succeeds. After downloading and running the 1MB installer, we were subjected to another 180MB of downloading at 32K/sec., which took about an hour and a half on a corporate LAN. (To be fair, we did download the entire package.) Once the game was running, however, our frustrations vanished in a wondrous haze of retro space gaming. This first stable version of the open-source 3DO port of Star Control II is as fun to play as the original, which is saying a lot.
The graphics may look retro today, but the hybrid gameplay--a complicated mix of strategy, role-playing, and space combat--matches up with any current release. Every ship is different, so learning their strengths and weaknesses is essential. While you explore an immense galaxy in a free-form adventure, a well-integrated story ties in an epic saga of alien domination. Star Control II is one of the greatest PC games of all time, and if you've never tried it, The Ur-Quan Masters is mandatory.
Our advice: Skip the remixes, at least at first, which download much more slowly than the game itself. For maximum speed, you can skip speech and music altogether (but then you'll never know what "Mmrnmhrm" sounds like).

I downloaded this game a few weeks ago and beat it recently, and in my opinion, this game is awesome. It's a lot of fun to play, and the humor is very witty. To be honest, I laughed several times during the game.
Cons
The game can be pretty difficult for first timers, but the official Wiki is basically a player's guide, which is extremely helpful.

A Game that stands the test of time.
Great work on the port,multiple platforms...windows/linux/macosx/bsd, and excellent remixes of the fantastic original MOD music. be sure to download the 0.50 version on the project site at sc2.sourceforge.net which comes complete with intro/ending videos that were missing in the 0.4 version and download all the extra packages including ofcourse the music remixes which sport some great electronic trance tunes in Ogg Vorbis format...
Last but not least,this game features one of the best and fun 1v1 multiplayer modes,the Super Melee.
A Great PC Classic.
Well worth the extra download(300mb)and a definitive must have.

Awesome Game. Very custumizable upgrades for your ship. You choose who you want to fight and don't want to fight. (most of the time) Very great fun and very addictive. (I can't stop playing, I even turned down a huge party so I could play it all night! Haha, I guess I'll be sober for a while.)
Cons
Takes a wicked long time to install. I would suggest expecting it to take all day, so don't be prepared to play it today. Also, it takes a while to learn everything there is to know about this game, but once you get through that rough patch (took me about an hour or so) the game is great fun.

An excellent download, this game was and still is a groundbreaking spacefaring RPG. Few current games can contest its innovative battle system and thrilling story. The sound is well written and the gameplay area is huge. A classic on its own accord, just mentioning that it's free is amazing.
Cons
Graphics and sound are not the best, and the game doesn't exactly lead you in-it starts with a difficulty bang. The multiplayer is also very limited.

I downloaded this a while back, beat it and just threw it away. I downloaded this a secont time with a remix nad that was a little different yet I beat it. Well I didnt bother to review it so here comes everything. The pros is everything about the game. The remake was a great remake of the original and thats why it is so good. The game itself is wonderful but only if you like the style. The installer helps if you need a faster connection but when i downloaded this game the first time I skipped the audio and downloaded it very simple. Even with those factors gone the game was great. It was like a slice of mystery with a great adventure. It is hard at first when you have little resources but you should explore the map as soon as you can and speed up your ship as soon as you can. When I downloaded this game with music it seemed even better like it had to fit together to be that way.

To respect this game you have to be into its type of genre otherwise it will get boring reeally quick.
