The volunteer developers of The GIMP have been working hard to develop a polished, user-friendly, and freely distributed image editor. This application caught our attention--and hearts--as one of the most powerful general-purpose image editors around. The application's features include channels; layers and masks; filters and effects; tabbed palettes; editable text tools; and color operations such as levels. The application provides professional tools that can stand against the big boys without the hefty price tag. The only downside to this otherwise flawless program is the installation process. As it stands now, you have to install the GTX Runtime Environment and The GIMP separately. Once installed, though, the program is extremely powerful and easy to work with. The GIMP is ideal for amateur photographers, Web designers, and anyone who wants to create and edit professional-quality digital images on a budget.Publisher's description
From Gimp :GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a freely distributed piece of software suitable for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition, and image authoring. It is a powerful piece of software with capabilities not found in any other free software product. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert-quality photo-retouching program, an online batch-processing system, a mass production image renderer, or an image-format converter. GIMP is modular, expandable, and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image-manipulation procedures to be easily scripted. Version 2.0.3 is a bug-fixing release.
Note: You will need to download both GTK+ Runtime Environment and The Gimp installers. Install GTK+ before installing The Gimp.

Version: The GIMP 2.2
Pros: For a free program I have to say it is one of the best out there. After I became use to how it worked I found it to be much more powerfull than I thought it would be.
Cons: Most of what I'm going to put here in the cons area should help new users to this product. (These are more less suggestions rather than cons.)
This is a very complicated program, so make sure you go to the gimp site and study the tutorials before you find yourself overwhelmed by it.
For the initial setup make sure you adjust the amount of memory this uses if you don't have a lot on your machine. I'm saying this because a lot of the cheap store bought machines only come with 256 mb of ram, and depending on everything you have going you can easily force this to crash your machine.
If you have problems downloading this on download.com as I did, just go to the official site and pick a different mirror. ( After trying to dl it here 3 times and getting a corrupt file error every time that is what I had to do.)
Lastly you MUST download the gtk runtime and install it first or this product will not do you a bit of good.

Version: The GIMP 2.2
Pros: It is pretty powerful and easy to use. Has pretty much everything that you could ask for in an image editing utility. It imports/exports from a variety of formats and it's free.
Cons: Some of the tools aren't quite as integrated as they could be because open-source software is developed by different people.

Version: The GIMP 2.2
"Free software doesn't get much better than this"
Pros: For a free programme, the gimp is extremely powerful. It may not quite be up to the standard of the commercial equivalents, but that doesn't stop it trying. Has a wealth of functions and settings, highly configurable, very stable and capable of all you would require of it. This is why I love open source.
Cons: I've found it to be a little resource hungry on my computer, although I guess that should be expected. Downloading was a little complicated, although if you visit the official site it runs you through the process simply enough. The programme also takes a little while to get used to if you are not familiar with the functions. A tutorial would be beneficial to understand some of the more complex functions.
However, I would still highly recommend the gimp.

Version: The GIMP 2.2
"this program is awesome....i'd definitely reccomend it"
Pros: this program is perfect for anyone who wants a good graphics program but can't afford photoshop or paint shop pro. its has many of the same features as these programs, and i dont get why people are saying its hard to use. as long as you play around with it, you'll get the hang of it. i have dial up and it took a while to download, but not an extremely long time.
Cons: it can be a little slow sometimes, but my computer is slow so that might be why
