"Fantastic. But I found free Photoshop here: fwrd.pw/CSP"

    October 15, 2014   |   By dess71

    Version: GIMP 2.8.14

    Pros

I like the software GIMP which will do most of the things Photoshop does. But in my opinion it is not updated frequently as it should.

    Cons

Needs improvement on interface and features.

    Summary

In general this is too much for free but Adobe Photoshop also has free version which works perfect: fwrd.pw/CSPS

"Best Free Photo Editing Program Ever!"

    July 28, 2014   |   By Lloyd_Hayes

    Version: GIMP 2.8.10

    Pros

I can't go into all of the features of this program because the list is too great.
I will say that this program has about 98% of the features of the best photo editing software out there.
    It also supports graphic tablets.
    It's free.
It runs on any operating system. Any version of Windows, MAC, Linux (Any build), Chrome, any version of BSD, etc. Learn it once and you can use it on any computer running any operating system.

    Cons

The program was designed from a programmers view using one of the free UNIX type operating systems such as Linux. And it carries that idea throughout it's menus and plug-ins. It takes awhile to learn how to use it.
The program is slow to startup. (It searches your computer for resources that it can use in your work.)
Installing plug-ins takes some knowledge on how programmers do things.
The automatic Windows installer doesn't always put a link to the program in the startup menu. (Doing a custom install may be required with you selecting the option of adding a desktop icon.)

    Summary

This is one of the greatest photo editing programs ever written. I've used all of the most advanced photo editing software programs available for Windows and I find that this program will do about 98% of what any of the others will do.
I use this program 100% when working on a none-Windows operating systems.

Some functions that you may be looking for can only be found with additional plug-ins. There is a Zipped download collection of popular extensions and plug-ins available from the Gimp website. (I just checked and the Zipped pack of plug-ins and extensions is available here at Download.com.) Plus there is a great number of individual plug-ins and extensions available from the Gimp plugin registry.

I have used this program for many years now. One sad note here is that there appears to be less activity on the Gimp website now then there used to be.

Installing and mastering this free program will open the photography world to you in a way that you may not have imagined.

There are several large books available from the on-line book stores on ways to use this program.

    Updated on Jul 28, 2014

Download.com shows version 2.8.8 as the latest version. It's not. I have version 2.8.10 on my computer, which is the latest version at this point, and it's over 6 months old.

    "Worst program ever"

    July 23, 2014   |   By Ornot_Bitwise

    Version: GIMP 2.8.10

    Pros

It's free... and you get what you pay for

    Cons

Everything. The user interface was designed by a brain-damaged baboon. Or several of them. Layers make no sense. Paths make no sense.

The ONLY reason to ever use GIMP is because you can't afford Adobe Photoshop Elements.

    Summary

Skip it. Steal the money for Elements from your local meth pusher.

"Used to be good, now it's pretty much worthless"

    May 13, 2014   |   By aus10mag

    Version: GIMP 2.8.10

    Pros

    none anymore

    Cons

in the past, you could create a .xcf design, and quickly "save as" just about any format you wanted (.pdf, .jpg, .png). The current version 2.8 gimp no longer allowed a "save as" to a standard web-friendly format. 2.8 required you to "export" in order to save it as a format that is different to .xcf.

Now it doesn't even allow you to export. says a .jpg and .png are not known file types. and to select a known file type from the list (a list that is blank)

    Summary

this software was awesome, free design software that you could download and use on the fly if you needed to create an image. Now it doesn't even make any sense to use because a .xcf is not recognized on the internet as a known file type.

    "THE BEST alternative to photoshop."

    March 11, 2014   |   By arcnet29

    Version: GIMP 2.8.10

    Pros

Free, awesome features eg. Intelligent scissors, scaling options, shearing, and many other cool features like easy scaling of image. Moreover this is open source, and regularly updated. easy to use! and has online manual. Lastly it does not require too much space.

    Cons

Sometimes while doing undo the process, the picture gets deleted, though there is redo option, but it becomes irritating one few occasions, but this is easily overlooked because it can avoided with a bit of practice.

    Summary

An excellent software for photo editing, easy to use, and has all options of Photoshop.

    "A Most Excellent Program"

    February 25, 2014   |   By HBC_News

    Version: GIMP 2.8.10

    Pros

    Easy to use
    Very stable
Works with every operating system I've used it on
    Excellent open source program
As good as Photoshop for the beginner to intermediate graphics designer
    FREE

    Cons

    I don't know of any

    Summary

I have been using Gimp for many years and have watched it develop and get better and better. God bless those involved in this awesome program because it is a God send to those of us who can't afford the pricey programs like the Adobe suite. There is a learning curve but there is a lot of tutorials online if you will just search them out. Be patient and have fun. Gimp is GREAT!

"A slightly clunky but incredibly useful free"

    February 23, 2014   |   By Tinnako

    Version: GIMP 2.8.10

    Pros

    - many advanced features.
    - comparable to Photoshop (most of the time).
    - none of the cost.
    - most people will not need a more advanced program than this.

    Cons

    - interface feels less intuitive than Photoshop (similar tools are in different places, sometimes more of an effort to do certain things).

    - has a learning curve, but this is to be expected with high-end photo editing software. There are lots of help files and tutorials online that can help you get to grips with GIMP.

Don't let that put you off; if you can learn to operate PS or any other high-end photo editing software, you can manage GIMP.

    Summary

Having learned PS at school, I am familiar with a fair number of the functionalities of high-end photo editing software and have enjoyed using both. Although GIMP is not as sleek as PS, it is unparalleled among free image editing software for the number of features it offers.

If you can afford PS and absolutely need some of the functions that only PS offers, then PS is great. But if you just need something a bit more advanced than MSPaint, or are on a budget, give GIMP a try. It's free, after all.

    "Too confusing to use"

    February 15, 2014   |   By rossasaurusrex

    Version: GIMP 2.8.10

    Pros

    free, free

    Cons

can't perform basic functions expected of image software

    Summary

Simple things like resizing images take forever and more complicated things like copying from one file and pasting into another are so frustrating it's worth it to just pay for a decent product
