TestDisk is a powerful data recovery utility. It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally erasing your Partition Table). PhotoRec is file data recovery software designed to recover lost pictures or lost files from digital camera memory (CompactFlash, Memory Stick, SecureDigital, SmartMedia, Microdrive, MMC, USB Memory Drives), even Hard Disks and CDRom. PhotoRec is safe to use, it will never attempt to write to the drive or memory support you are about to recover from. Recovered files are instead written in the directory from where you are running the PhotoRec program.

"Recovered FORMATTED SD CARD AND DVD RW"

when a run the program appears in the task menu a file ¨CONIME.EXE¨ that appeard in the System32 folder when I installed this program, I was looking about the file in the net and it´s called a backdoor that hacker uses, please what can you tell me about this? thankx.

Quickly found my lost partition and restored perfectly....And it was free. It just doesn't get any better than that!

No pretty interface, but compared to how it performs and the price, that's not a concern at all.
Summary
My internal hard drive was failing, so I verified that I had all important files backed up to an external hard drive (music, financial stuff, tax info, and years and years worth of irreplacable family photos). Then like a big doofus, I promptly deleted the partitions of both the internal and external drive. I couldn't bear the thought of losing all that data, especially the photos. I found this software and gave it a try. Within a couple of minutes, I had every lost file back. A huge thanks to the writers of this software. I've never left a review here before, but felt compelled to after using this software.

"bit complicated but effective software"

1-)first of all my (avira) anti-virus prog rejected the prog download due to "virus" found!? I ignored and downloaded. Installation complicated; program works in MS-DOS mode. or at least this was what I could... Other software I downloaded were recognizing the lost partitions but asking hefty money for recovery. Indedd I paid and purchased a program called "Recover Data for FAT & NTFS" which was useless for me; I wasted my money.
Then I installed this program. I belive everybody has a diffrent type problem but my external usb hard disk first partitioned then one partition converted from FAT32 to NTFS and then both partitions merged to one disk, then of course all data deleted etc etc...This program found the lost partitions, then reverted from FAT32 to NTFS; so I could manage retrive all data back. All done within a few hours -disk was 120 gig-(After reverting FAT32 to NTFS, you need to reboot which took abot ten minutes the computer start up...

Not the easiest to use unless you know computers very well. But the fact that works and saves all data that would otherwise be lost makes up for any downfalls it my have.

It is powerful and can really recovered all my files in a re-fromated and re-partitioned harddisk. Far more powerful than those you have to spend money to buy, my sincere reccommendation to others.

After trying every other recovery software, even skipping past this one because of the not so friendly interface I read the comments here and decided it was my last hope before sending my camcorder away. I had formatted my camcorder and then recorded new video and formatted again... and the best the other software could do was find the most recently formatted files (not what I was looking for). This software was able to recover EVERYTHING that I was trying to recover near the end part of the 30gb drive. PhotoRec totally works and saved the video's I had "thought" I had saved to the pc but hadn't... I thought they were lost forever.
Cons
This thing WORKS and uses very little resources... How could anyone complain especially since it's FREE!!! Thanks PhotoRec!!!

Pros
A little old school in that it uses a command prompt. But was completely free and did its job. Recovered all my data (from documents to pictures) from a corrupt external hard drive that other "free" programs couldn't even recognize. Recovered 10G (18,000 files) in less than 10 minutes. What more can you ask for!
