This straightforward backup utility makes it a snap to safeguard and synchronize your files, and its freeware price just sweetens the deal. Surprisingly flexible for a free program, SyncBack can save your files anywhere: on external hard drives, in ZIP archives, on network drives, on CDs (using UDF), or transfer them via FTP. Recovering from a drive loss is also cinch, with a convenient restore tool that replicates folder trees along with the files in them.

It lets you define multiple scheduled backup jobs so you can just set 'em and forget 'em, allowing users to create specific backup jobs for certain folders or file types. You can control the way files are compared and selected for backup: the program comes with ready-made profiles to make the process as easy as possible. It's hard not to like that SyncBack doesn't use many system resources when working in the background, and backups can be set to export their logs to an HTML file for easy viewing. All in all, it's an excellent choice for home users and small businesses.

"Works most of the time. V6.5.30 is a bit buggy"

Summary

- V6.5.30 is a bit buggy
Several checkbox options are not saved correctly.

When copying a profile, the file selections of the 'copy from' profile are retained even though the folder path is changed and completely different.

Sometimes erroneous error are displayed after a profile has run indication that it could not copy a file. However, the file it reports the error on is in a completely different folder!

- Bizzar user interface decisions
The developers have made some very strange user interface decisions.
Examples below.

There is no way to clear the status of a profile once if has been run. However, if the profile is part of a group, the status of ONLY the group can be cleared.

When copying a profile, the file selections of the 'copy from' profile are retained even though the folder path is changed and completely different. There is a cleanup button to remove the erroneous files / folders from the list. But why include them in the first place? They don't belong! There is a checkbox to automatically clear these erroneous files / folders from the list. However, the placement of this checkbox forces you to see the erroneous data before you are able to clear it. In addition, the cleanup automatically checkbox is only saved sometimes.

There is a button panel toolbar that allow quick access to popular items. Unfortunately, the developers have decided the buttons that are displayed and have provided no way for the user to change them.

Hope you like 8pt font size. ALL data and labels through the entire application is fixed at 8pt. There is an option to change the font face but NOT size! This is just unacceptable!

There are nagging prompts for everything. The good news is that there are checkbox options to silence them. Unfortunately, these checkbox settings are on a per profile basis and NOT global. So you get to set them for every profile!

Each profile has an encryption option. Oddly, when you select this option in the left pane, a blank right pane is displayed with the message "Click here for encryption information". Why not just show the encryption information when the encryption tab is selected???

Very strange user interface in spots!

"OK, but deeds 2x free disk space"

January 06, 2014  |  By csomervi

 |  Version: SyncBackFree 6.3.13.0

Pros

Backs up a drive without stopping for each file a regular copy might ask you some question for, or stop altogether.

Result is ZIP file - save some space.

Cons

Requires space on some disk partition for a work file as large as the eventual ZIP file, and then it copies the completed work file to the completed ZIP file.

I ended up using 7Zip for backing up my largest partitions.

"Kept freezing my computer"

December 14, 2013  |  By Pids1

 |  Version: SyncBackFree 6.3.13.0

Pros

There are no pros. Kept freezing when attempting to run.

Cons

Tried it twice and both times froze my laptop. Took up many system resources. Very slow and unreliable program.

Summary

I would not recommend this backup software to anyone. It's better to just copy your files manually.

"Great for backing up to a network drive."

August 27, 2013  |  By alandaviesi

 |  Version: SyncBackFree 6.3.13.0

Pros

Easy to use. Unlike most backup software, it will copy across the network backing up to a remote network drive.

I have been using this for about a year and it has saved my bacon. I was able to access previous version of overwritten files and rewrite files from a broken PC to a new PC. Intuitive to set up and use.

It provides a log to your pc after backup so you can monitor if there is any problem.

Cons

None I can think of.

Summary

Great software, highly recommended.

"FREE VERSION DID NOT WORK and support request rejected"

August 13, 2013  |  By JJOOHHNNMM

 |  Version: SyncBackFree 6.3.13.0

Pros

Non that I can find

Cons

The blurb appeared to do just what I wanted, but in practice, it failed to run the backup profile.
No product support available for free version.

Summary

I downloaded and installed SyncBackFree twice, and each time, I set up a profile as described in the My First Backup.pdf file. The simulated run completed successfully, but running the profile for real failed with all files showing the message "Failed to copy from Source : Cannot copy file (5): Access is denied" in the log file.
I was trying to backup data files from my C:drive to my D:Recovery drive on a Windows7 OS. This seemed like a simple enough task. There were oodles of free space on my D:drive.
Everything I read about this software indicated that it was very popular and it appeared that it should do everything that I wanted it do, but it DID NOT WORK.

"Good backup, does everything the average person needs."

June 22, 2013  |  By joetteka

 |  Version: SyncBackFree 6.3.13.0

Pros

Keeps my computer backed up, so I when I test something and things go wrong, I know I can get my data back. I've tried others, and they are not as flawless, nor as versatile. This one allows me to back up over my wifi connection, or to any other medium I choose, something others don't come close to allowing.

Cons

It is a little hard to set up the first time, but even I figured it out without reading the instructions, so others should be able to use it just as easily!

Summary

I've used it for years, and it just keeps being better than any others I've tried out there.

"Thumbs up! Excellent and BS Free"

June 22, 2013  |  By Crankinoldies

 |  Version: SyncBackFree 6.3.13.0

Pros

I tested 8 or more free backups over a few months.
One thing about Syncback, it works. No annoying
message with some excuse why it didn't. I pointed
a folder across the network to a NAS. Worked
like a charm, every time!

Cons

None. For me, works flawlessly.

Summary

Like I said, it works, AND no BS.
The settings were slightly complicated,
but after that, no problem.
