It compresses files, but "super cool" is a big stretch for such plain design and basic functionality. SuperCool Multiple ZIP's double tabbed interface includes a lot of unused real estate. That makes it hard to understand why most icons are so tiny. Tooltips help guide users, but the overall impression is of a programmer-designed interface that needs a designer's touch. Most options are set with radio buttons or pulldown menus, but text labels are not as clear as needed.
Terms are not obvious. It took a trip to the Help file for guidance on the three zip options: Single ZIP, Blocked ZIP, and Multiple ZIPs. Blocked ZIP stumped many testers, but it was merely an option to compress files in user-specified sizes. Single ZIP simply compresses all of the files in the queue into one compressed file, while the Multiple ZIPs option creates a compressed file for every item in the queue. The rest of the program's settings were for file naming, inclusion of directories and subfolders, and other housekeeping issues. We wished there were a few more options related to managing or creating multiple zipped files.
The program worked OK, but lacked a few niceties found even in some freeware programs. You can easily password protect a compressed file, but the program forces you to reenter the password for each file inside. There's also no error message if you forget the password on a protected compressed file. The app simply doesn't extract the files.
The 30-use trial seemed a bit stingy at first glance, but considering the program's slim feature set, it's more than long enough. There's also a 5-file limit for the queue of files to compress. SuperCool Multiple ZIP isn't really cool--in looks or functionality--but then who's going to even try, much less buy the Just Adequate ZIP program?
