Pros
Streamripper rips the actual stream coming to your computer without resampling the audio. If the station provides track information (idtags) the program will separate tracks into separate files. Otherwise you get one big file. But you can use something like MP3DirectCut to separate out individual tracks.
Cons
Depending on the stream you may have to tweek the settings to get the program to detect the silence in between tracks and not have the beginnings and ends of songs overlapping. Some stations have very little silence in between tracks and the program doesn't always know where to stop one track and begin the next. You can force the program to overlap and use MP3DirectCut to trim the beginnings and ends of tracks if you have problems with certain stations.

1. Simple and seemingly limited but VERY usefull interface and feature set.
2. Rips the stream bit by bit to your HD.. meaning there's no re-encoding of the files from the original as it is received.

I've had a previous version in the past and thought I'd try some of the "premium" rippers available, now I'm back to streamripper, I think that says it all. The "premium" rippers looked more professional, allowed ripping of different kinds of streams aside from shoutcast, you didn't need to have winamp open to rip streams, and you could rip multiple streams at once without opening multiple instances of the program.
However, all these programs lacked many of the simple and very usefull features included in streamripper that I personally find essential. Not to mention some of them didn't copy the stream "as is" to the HD but re-encoded which led to SQ issues with some streams.
One drawback of streamripper is that if you want to rip 5 different shoutcast stations for instance you need to open 5 instances of winamp to do so because streamripper is not a standalone app, it only works as an attachment to winamp. I don't find this to be that big of a deal though and I regularly rip multiple streams at once without problems but it's worth noting.
On the plus side streamripper lets you either split the stream into seperate tracks automatically (by id3tag) or you can rip to a single file for those annoying stations that change id3tag constantly mid-song, if you do leave the rip as 1 big file streamripper will spit out a .cue file so you can still split the track yourself at a later time if you wish, which I think is pretty cool.
You can also manipulate the file naming scheme so that streamripper spits out tracks named in the way you want. For instance in the "pattern" menu you can go: %S/%q - %A - %T .. this tells streamripper to rip into a seperate folder named after the shoutcast stream (%S/) and the file name will look something like this "0001 - Some Artist - Track Title.mp3", brilliant!
Most importantly there is never any re-encoding going on, the bits and bytes Winamp receives are written by Streamripper directly to your hard drive. Many other rippers I've tried take the .mp3 stream and re-encode it, not only is that a downgrade in sound quality but some streams would not re-encode properly leaving artifacts and ear piercing glitches in the tracks.
Streamripper really is the best, and it costs nothing. -

I kep trying because I use winamp all the time. However streamripper is dead on arrival
I have downloaded streamripper several times. It constantly gives me the same response 'unable to create a file'. What's more it always appears to be the same message. I can find no programme to delete in fact no trace of streamripper apart from the tray icon.

I've used this plug-in since 2003, if you love using Winamp to listen to internet radio streaming, install this plug-in coz not only will it record your best internet radio station but it will also save it in mp3 format with song name and artists. Also, if ever their is a duplicatation, it will put it in another folder for easy deletion. GREAT PLUG-IN.
