- Version reviewed: Springboard Summarizer for Internet Explorer 1
It's a bit misleading to call the text this Internet Explorer add-on pulls from a Web page a true summary. Springboard Summarizer's interface is a single button and simple input box toolbar for Internet Explorer. The program is easy to install, learn, and operate, but doesn't seem any more useful than cut and paste.
A Help manual isn't needed for this simple app. Surf to any Web page, enter a percentage of text in the toolbar, and click a single button. Springboard Summarizer pops up a short summary of the Web page that is easily copied to the clipboard. Unfortunately, the summary is created by copying the page text and simply skipping sentences. The smaller the chosen percentage, the more sentences are skipped. While it might be useful to a select few, merely skipping sentences does not create a coherent summary. For users who use the summary as merely a start, it is easy to edit the text in the pop-up, but that seems to defeat the purpose.
Of course, this toolbar doesn't work on Flash-based sites, or any Web site that depends on video or sound. Springboard Summarizer failed to impress us with its less-than-useful summaries.
