Though unimaginatively named, this tool for splitting images into tiles is easy to operate and effective for the most part.
Split and Tile Image Splitter's very basic but intuitive interface needs little instruction. The small amount of text on the interface itself is enough to direct even inexperienced users. It's as simple as choosing an image and picking the number of tiles. Radio buttons let users easily opt to either split the image by number of segments or pixel size per segment. Then it's a matter of entering the proper number in the horizontal and vertical boxes. Press a single button and the image is immediately spit and displayed on a second interface. Segments can be saved, or you can print a selected segment or open it in Paintbrush. Saving all of the segments is easy, but the save order and numbering options are preset. We would have liked the option to save other than left-to-right then top-to-bottom. Users are warned if the settings will create a too large number of tiles, but some testers reported that the program failed to display images split into a high number of tiles, although it would still save them.
Split and Tile uses little overhead, is very fast, efficient, and easy-to-use. The 40-use trial gives users enough time to run the program through its paces. Any Web designer, artist, or programmer looking to split images into tiles should give this app a test drive.
