This free program offers some useful system details to those savvy enough to understand its results. SpeedFan's tabbed interface isn't hard to navigate, but most users won't be able to make head or tail of the data this utility provides. The program's system-tray icon tells you the temperature of your PC's hard drive, and you can receive information on voltage and fan speeds.
The utility can display SMART data and includes a tool for resetting motherboard clocks. Basically, if this review makes no sense to you, SpeedFan is above your head and won't be worth downloading. However, PC technicians and those who like to do their own system maintenance might as well take a look at this application, particularly since it costs nothing.
Publisher's description
From Almico Software :SpeedFan monitors voltages, fan speeds, and temperatures in computers with hardware monitor chips. It can even access SMART information for hard disks that support this feature, and show hard-disk temperatures if that's supported. SpeedFan fully supports SCSI disks and can even change the FSB on some hardware (but this should be considered a bonus feature). At the lowest level, SpeedFan is a hardware monitor software that can access temperature sensors, but mainly it can control fan speeds (depending on the capabilities of your sensor chip and your hardware) according to the temperatures inside your PC, thus reducing noise and power consumption.
Version 4.38 has added full support for AMCC/3ware SMART readings and improved CPU identification routines.

Version: SpeedFan 4.38
Pros: It does give you some usable voltage info.
Cons: I installed Speed Fan, used it for several weeks. I then started having streaming video problems, as this program runs in the background. I found out Speed Fan was the cause. I uninstalled it and had no more video problems. Install with caution.

Version: SpeedFan 4.38
Pros: According to the help, it works perfect and it must be if I 'd have installed it in Windows XP or even in Vista, but I didn't had the opportunity to test it in previous version. I installed it in a laptop runing Windows 7
Cons: Don't work still in Windows 7.

Version: SpeedFan 4.38
"DISPLAYS SOME QUESTIONABLE INFORMATION"
Pros: It reports numerous component temps, fan speeds, voltages & other useful information. This is done in a pretty logical to read layout, if you don?t count the Temp1, Temp2, etc., labels for some items. About 80% of the readings are probably accurate.
Cons: Questionable accuracy of temperature readings. GPU reads 124 F. A finger on the GPU area shows it?s barely warm. Temp3 registers -198 F. Close to the temp of DRY ICE.
Summary: The layout and various layers of information indicate this would be really good program if the items I've mentioned above are corrected.
It shows the model#?s of the HD?s elsewhere, a description by the HD0, HD1, etc listing would be more use... read more >> -
