Editors' review

This free program offers some useful system details to those savvy enough to understand its results. SpeedFan's tabbed interface isn't hard to navigate, but most users won't be able to make head or tail of the data this utility provides. The program's system-tray icon tells you the temperature of your PC's hard drive, and you can receive information on voltage and fan speeds.

The utility can display SMART data and includes a tool for resetting motherboard clocks. Basically, if this review makes no sense to you, SpeedFan is above your head and won't be worth downloading. However, PC technicians and those who like to do their own system maintenance might as well take a look at this application, particularly since it costs nothing.

    "Speedfan bundled with malware!"

    June 18, 2014   |   By lsharpe69

    Version: SpeedFan 4.49

    Pros

Software works good so far as I can tell, but once you download from CNet and run Speedfan the malicious payload has already installed.

    Cons

This malware bundle gives you option to 'decline' each payload installation, yet even if you carefully decline all baggage it installs anyway. Visible in control panel (Windows 7 Ultimate) but will NOT uninstall. Had to run Malwarebytes in safe mode w/networking to quarantine the 300 items found. CNet denies this is an issue and deleted my original post. I simply asked them to go home and install on own PC from their own site! Even after quarantine your Google spellll check will no longer function either (unless you manually correct). I need to replace my hard drive anyway, so this nightmare will go away. Yet your 'Elm Street' will begin here!

    Summary

DO NOT INSTALL THIS SOFTWARE FROM CNET. It is loaded with malware and CNet is in denial. Don't say you weren't warned. If you are a novice user? Avoid completely. I will no longer believe CNet is a secure source for software. This is proof in the pudding!

"Could be a good tool, but didn't work with my computer."

    April 29, 2014   |   By jandsm5321

    Version: SpeedFan 4.49

    Pros

Simple, light, lots if information on your computer.

    Cons

The numbers it reported weren't accurate, Even going to the BIOS showed different numbers than what SpeedFan was reporting so I'm not sure where they got theirs.

    Summary

I don't know where people get this idea of malware. I suspect the error is between their chair and the keyboard. First, CNet has been adding ads when you use their auto-downloader. Second, CNet has adds that mimic download links that usually send you to shifty websites. I didn't see any malware, it didn't change any settings on my computer.

"program good but bundled with CRAP"

    April 21, 2014   |   By hhb1

    Version: SpeedFan 4.49

    Pros

My virus scanner (McAfee) identified a trojan when I downloaded from the CNET site. I went to the author's website to get it - and was still bombarded with requests to download crap when I installed coupon sites, toolbars, pc speedup, and I'm not sure what else). WHEN YOU INSTALL THIS, BE SURE TO DECLINE ALL THE BUNDLED CRAP!!! READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!!

    I'm still wary of it.

    Cons

    BUNDLED CRAPWARE

    "Essential system utility."

    March 08, 2014   |   By Fanboy123

    Version: SpeedFan 4.49

    Pros

-Full control over all the controllable fans on your system.
-System Fan's can be link to any temperature the reading the software can detect. Want to link a system fan blowing on your videocard to the temperature of your video card, no problem. No other software I am aware of can do this.

    Cons

-Can be daunting to for layman users to set-up, but well worth the effort to do so.

I really need to post some setup guides when I get the chance to help other users out.

    Summary

First, don't know what reports about trojan's, etc is. If in doubt, take the time to download from the author's website as the installer on the latest version, I just tried, has nothing like that. It will install a service for the program to monitor all it needs to monitor, that's it.

To the programs itself. The review on this website is not helpful. Most sites classify this as a monitoring product, which make it no different to lots of other software you can get to monitor temperatures, fans speeds, voltages etc. Those review and classifications miss the point though.

This is a unique piece of software. Where as other software tells you your temperatures, fan speeds etc, what this software does with those details is unique, and makes it the first piece of software I install on my a new system after OS patches and drivers.

This software allows you to control all the fans on your system (if compatible) and link those fan to any of the temperatures it is monitoring. Not only one temperature though per fan, but many. You can then create graphs of how your fans should speed up or down depending on those temperatures.

Some motherboard support fan speed up when temperatures on the motherboard start to get high. They do not support the fan speed up to be determined by temperatures of devices external to the motherboard, like videocards and hard drives. This software is the only one that does.

This only works with compatible fan controllers and the software author Alfredo is always working to include the latest hardware. Those if anyone has got some programming skill I think he could do with any help to keep this software up to date.

Before you ask I have no involvement with the software and am solely a user of it. I did request that a graph system to match the temperatures to fan speeds be implemented via a posting on the authors website and it was....

Anyway if you like to have your PC quite when not used much and cool when gaming, this is a vital and unique piece of software to have installed.

    "A "good" Malware/Crapware Program!"

    February 28, 2014   |   By LCBozo

    Version: SpeedFan 4.49

    Pros

SpeedFan works -- at a heavy price!

    Cons

It's not worth all the crap/malware garbage that screws-up your PC!

    Summary

I suggest CNET evaluate applications before placing them on their website! I now have a pretty low opinion of this site after my experience with (what used to be a good app) SpeedFan. It should now be called "EvilSpeed."

"Works just fine, as it always did"

    January 28, 2014   |   By Wakimiko

    Version: SpeedFan 4.49

    Pros

Does exactly what it's supposed to do: monitors and adjusts fan speeds, monitors temperatures and voltages and even shows S.M.A.R.T. data for your drives and CPU cores activity. Basically, it looks the same and does mostly the same stuff it did 10 or so years ago when I first started using it, but nothing else is needed.

    Cons

    Nothing here.

    Summary

I don't know where all those people whining about malware got it from, I downloaded the installer from the author's website and it's perfectly clean.

"Do NOT download!! Rife with malware"

    January 22, 2014   |   By blackelemental

    Version: SpeedFan 4.49

    Pros

None at all. I didn't even have a chance to try the product. See below.

    Cons

    Malware galore.

    Summary

Upon downloading Speedfan, I opened Firefox and Chrome to find that my new tab page and search functions were removed and replaced with the Conduit search engine. The download basically added malware to my computer and hijacked my web browsers with nonsense. Good thing I have Malwarebytes and CCleaner for damage control! This is my first bad experience with this website and I hope that this will be the last.

"SpeedFan fails to adjust fan speed automatically."

    January 06, 2014   |   By kckbxer61

    Version: SpeedFan 4.49

    Pros

Easy to install. Originally adjusted fan speed as needed to keep pc temperature ideal after I only checked "automatic fan speed" and did so flawless for months.

    Cons

Out of the blue, SpeedFan's automatic fan speed adjustment stopped working completely and actually slows the pc fans as the temperature rises. Even after following instructions on additional steps to have the program control fan speed automatically other than just checking "automatic fan speed", it is still doing nothing to lower the extremely high temperatures being detected. Where SpeedFan used to increase fan speeds above 2,000 rpm to keep the temperatures at an ideal range automatically and then slow down the speeds as the temperatures dropped, it now varies between speeds as low as 500-700 rpm, never going higher than 1,000 rpm, even though the detected temperatures run between 90 to 100+ degrees Celsius, 20-30 degrees hotter than it recommended for my pc and precisely where SpeedFan used to keep the emperatures. Despite nothing changing with my computer and multiple compressed air cleanings of the pc's interior, the problem persists and I'm hoping to find something that works.

    Summary

The program is too glitchy and hasn't been updated in some time. It works if it feels like it and then does absolutely nothing at other times. I would not recommend it to deal with overheating at all.

"No longer functions on a Haswell i7 4770k"

    January 01, 2014   |   By Mergatroid Mania

    Version: SpeedFan 4.49

    Pros

Awesome software if it works for you. You can customize it to show only the temps and fan speeds relevant to your system.

    Cons

I had used this software for years but this holiday season I upgraded my system to a ASUS Z87 with a Haswell i7 4770K, and speedfan will no longer pick up the system fans or all the temps.

    Summary

What can I say? One of my favorite pieces of software no longer functions on newer hardware. Was it caused by the Intel CPU or chipset, or by ASUS I cannot say, but I am a very sad panda.

It worked fine for me on any system I tried it on up to a Sandy Bridge i5 2500K on an ASUS board. I also use it at work quite often on customer's systems without many issues.

    Too bad, so sad.....
