The term rootkit is used to define a Trojan (or technology) used to hide the presence of a malicious object (process, file, registry key, network port) from the computer user or administrator. Removing rootkits without compromising system integrity is particularly challenging and needs to be done with care. Sophos Anti-Rootkit, finds and removes any rootkit that is hidden on your computer.

"poor - use Panda Anti Rootkit"

October 09, 2010  |  By johnorford

 |  Version: Sophos Anti-Rootkit 1.3

Pros

Nothing that I can see

Cons

It simply doesn't do the job - it's no use finding a few nasties if you leave others untouched.

"Total Crap"

May 22, 2009  |  By Krisando

 |  Version: Sophos Anti-Rootkit 1.3

Pros

None at all

Cons

This anti-virus has done my College over before, the system was soaked in viruses. This program is very good for finding false positives and calls everyday activities "suspicious" and closes your program with no prompt. Never found virus.

Summary

This has been the very worst anti-virus I have tried, from it being slow, to crashing windows, to closing programs on the fly with no prompt. Finding very little viruses and calling everything suspicious or virus (false positives). Making your own program it will likely say it's a virus, or even programs which manipulate memory or encrypt data will call virus. It is utter garbage and I warn everyone to stay away. We once had countless viruses on our network and this anti-virus and will not do a thing.

Worst anti virus ever,
Kris.

"Questionable privacy policy"

February 06, 2009  |  By TDurden1937

 |  Version: Sophos Anti-Rootkit 1.3

Pros

didn't install

Cons

The EULA places no limitation on distribution of your email address to third party persons and make no gaurantee that your email will be removed from advertizements

Summary

This program appears to ineffective (from user evals) and is mainly used to glean email addresses for advertising purposes.

"Don't Download. EULA has bad language."

January 05, 2009  |  By jh1836

 |  Version: Sophos Anti-Rootkit 1.3

Pros

Nothing. I didn't even dare downloading after reading the EULA.

Cons

After reading the comment from v.garb, I read the Sophos End-User Licence Agreement before very carefully. The language in the EULA was disturbing and I did not download.

Summary

The Sophos End-User Licence Agreement for Anti-Rootkit Tool states "You shall permit Sophos or an independent certified accountant appointed by Sophos access on written notice to Your premises and Your books of account and records at any time during normal business hours for the purpose of inspecting, auditing, verifying or monitoring the manner and performance of Your obligations under this Licence Agreement including without limitation the payment of all applicable licence fees. Sophos shall not be able to exercise this right more than once in each calendar year. To me this is bad language and is too great of a price for any software free or paid for.

"Do not download."

December 30, 2008  |  By Zane77

 |  Version: Sophos Anti-Rootkit 1.3

Pros

I like nothing at all.

Cons

They require your first and last name your e-mail account and a pass word just to download and use this product. Don't give them that information because it is an invasion of privacy.

"Updating--just not good enough"

December 09, 2008  |  By catmum

 |  Version: Sophos Anti-Rootkit 1.3

Pros

Found one questionable item, first time. Pleasant and quick-to-respond technical support staff. Free, which is nice of them...

Cons

There is no way to update.

Summary

To quote the pleasant technical support person:: "The RootKit is not like an AV product it does not update. We release new versions of the product every couple of months, at this point you would need to download the new version and use this."

I just don't see how this can possibly keep up with malware. I would really prefer to update more frequently, instead of having to download a whole new program every two months. I just see too many possible holes with this method.

"DON'T EVEN DOWNLOAD!"

July 11, 2008  |  By v.garb

 |  Version: Sophos Anti-Rootkit 1.3

Pros

Read below, and you'll see why I didn't DARE to download the software.

Cons

The download link takes you to a EULA (license agreement) page. Read the EULA before downloading!!! You're signing away ALL your rights, and even allowing their accountants and reps free access to your premises!!! This license agreement is proof that you MUST read before clicking! Who cares if the software works or not??? Don't sign away your rights!
