Slick, if not always smart, Sonique does what it should with some compromises. It supports the essential formats, along with skins and plug-ins, integrated Internet music searching via Lycos (decent) and Hotbot (useless), and links to music resources (parent company Lycos' music channel and the anemic Sonique site). Features are spread through a variety of screens making for a lot of extra clicking; and other little speed bumps tend to crop up. You can't, for example, add directories to your playlist (you must select all songs in the directory). Also vexing are basic usability violations, such as a small and slippery volume knob instead of a slider and an equalizer toggle that isn't sticky between screens. It is freeware, a plus, but with its elaborate download process requiring a membership (including your street address), Sonique could and should deliver a more competitive and compelling product.Publisher's description
From TerraLycos :Sonique is an audio player capable of handling MP3 files, Microsoft Windows Media files, audio CDs, and various other audio formats. It features a dynamic, windowless interface, complete with a fully animated menu system. Additional features include a full-featured playlist editor; a variety of unique output visualization modes; plug-ins; a robust control set featuring pitch, jog, and shuttle; support for skins; a balance and amplification adjustment; and a 20-band equalizer with spline-based level adjustment. Sonique supports many audio formats, including WMA, MPEG, MP2, MP3, WAV, MOD, XM, IT, S3M, and CD audio.
Version 1.96 includes minor bug fixes.

Version: Sonique 1.96
"BEST SOUND OF ALL FREE PLAYERS"
Pros: I have Real Player ,Windows Media Player, Winamp, J River, Quinsential, and a coulple media players that I purchased on line. Some have more features than Sonique, but none have better sound than Sonique. It has the clearest, crispsound of all of them, and I think you should download it and try for yourself. I made it my default media player. 5 Stars and TWO thumbs UP!

"ABANDONED BY LYCOS YEARS AGO"
Pros: THIS WAS THE BEST MEDIA PLAYER BY FAR IN IT'S DAY
Cons: LYCOS BOUGHT IT, GOT RID OF THE TOP NOTCH PROGRAMMERS, THEN ABANDONED IT YEARS AGO, WIPING THE COMMUNITY FORUM OF PLUGIN AND SKIN WRITERS, AND FAITHFUL USERS ALONG THE WAY FROM GOOD MEASURE.
NOW JUST A FOND MEMORY OF A PLAYER THAT STILL HASN'T BEEN BETTERED BY ANYONE. NOW IT'S JUST A BUGGY UNSTABLE PLAYER ON WINDOWS XP & NOT WORTH BOTHERING WITH.
THE ORIGINAL WRITERS CREATED QUINISSENTIAL MEDIA PLAYER, BUT IT WAS NEVER ANYTHING LIKE SONIQUE, AND NOW THAT TOO IS DEAD.

Version: Sonique 1.96
Pros: I've always liked sonic because of its perfect design and easy usage.
Cons: One thing that made me give one less star is sonic does not have a visualization studio (like in winamp) or something like that
