Windows' onscreen keyboard utility may not be great shakes, but in some ways it's better than Softboy.net On Screen Keyboard. Similar to the Windows program, this one lets you type characters by clicking them on a graphic facsimile of a keyboard. You can redefine the size and layout of the keyboard, change its color and font, or entirely alter its look with skins. You also can use it with a touch screen (though we didn't test this feature). The trouble starts when you actually get down to business. The onscreen keyboard doesn't register physical keypresses. It doesn't offer a keyboard-scanning mode. And nag windows keep popping up, sometimes right on top of the keyboard. The program does have a useful predictive-spelling feature, but even so, the $69.95 purchase price is ludicrous. Replace the Windows onscreen keyboard, by all means. Just replace it with something better.
