It's hard to stand out in the crowded field of defraggers, but SmartDefrag is able to do so with an unexpected twist.
It's not the fastest free defragger out there, when it comes to tidying up an entire hard drive all at once. But SmartDefrag boasts a system checker that continually defrags the files that you use the most, and does it without becoming a persistent drag on your system resources. When running in the background, the program only eats up 14MB of RAM, so it's possible to run it smoothly on older machines.
However, that RAM usage spikes when you use the app to defrag your whole system, and other popular free defraggers can and do move more quickly. Other features include a scheduler and some customization features to determine if you want the program to start when Windows loads, a battery-saving feature for laptops, and more.
Overall, if you think your system needs an incessant fragmentation guardian, this should be a great defragger for both novices and more experienced users.

Version: SmartDefrag Beta 5.01
Pros: I have really have liked Iobit's programs for a long time now and SmartDefrag Beta 5.01is at the top of the list. Easy to install, simple to navigate GUI, and love the real time auto defrag. Glad to see the optimize feature added back to this version. It helps speed up all my systems.
Works flawlessly on XP. You really need a good disk defragmentation tool to keep your Hard Drive running at peak performance. Having SmartDefrag with real time auto defrag is an added bonus that makes this program a must have!!!
Cons: Still quite buggy installed on Vista Ultimate. Refuses to load on start-up even though I have "load at start-up" checked in the options. I have my systems locked down very tight (security wise) so If anyone has or not had this problem,please include that in your reviews.
Had to rate the app 4 stars out of five because of this.

Pros: NONE
Cons: Usually I'm a fan of IObit programs, but this SmartDefrag Beta 5.01 has really disappointed me. It is extremely slow, eats up masses amounts of resources, unstable and very difficult to read. I'd much rather have the previous version, but can no longer find it. I'll have to uninstall this disastrous defragmentor and find a much better one.

Pros: It defrags your harddrive in the background, so that you don't need to think about it anymore.
Also has a feature called "Auto Defrag" which only defrags your harddrive when you are idle or not working on your computer.
Cons: None.

"Fastest but not the most powerful"
Pros: This is the best defrag utility to use inbetween powerful defag tools like Norton Speed disk, Auslogic, or TuneUp defrag. when it's in your system tray, it constantly defrags a little by little keeping your drive from behing to defraged when you do finally go all out. It can quickly defrag files, or defrag and rearrange files. This is a great free defrag utility.
Cons: the auto defrag makes higher disk usage which will slow your pc some, also the defrag engine is slightly weak in that it doesn't rearange files nearly as well as say speed disk or tuneup defrag. Also, in Vista, in order to get it to start with the PC, User Account Control must be disabled.
