It's hard to stand out in the crowded field of defraggers, but SmartDefrag is able to do so with an unexpected twist.
It's not the fastest free defragger out there, when it comes to tidying up an entire hard drive all at once. But SmartDefrag boasts a system checker that continually defrags the files that you use the most, and does it without becoming a persistent drag on your system resources. When running in the background, the program only eats up 14MB of RAM, so it's possible to run it smoothly on older machines.
However, that RAM usage spikes when you use the app to defrag your whole system, and other popular free defraggers can and do move more quickly. Other features include a scheduler and some customization features to determine if you want the program to start when Windows loads, a battery-saving feature for laptops, and more.
Overall, if you think your system needs an incessant fragmentation guardian, this should be a great defragger for both novices and more experienced users.

Version: SmartDefrag Beta 4.01
Pros: Easy to use, and you can shedule this to run automatically and it will shut down your pc when it has finished. There are some great features such as optimize and time shedule. This is a great programme with some useful features...and above all it is FREE! what more could you ask for?
Cons: Rather slow on 'optimize' (Best to run this after you have finished using your pc and set the shedule to switch off automatically)

Pros: I have been using Auslogics disc defrag recently and have something to compare it to. I am using both and find the Smartdefrag a really good addition. The lay out is simple and easy to use. As well as a defrag you can get it to optimize as well and one really nice feature is, if you want to do a defrag at the end of a session and don't want to sit by your computer and wait for it to finish doing all the defragging, you can tick a box and it will shut down your computer automatically once it has finished, nice touch. It is not the fastest but that is not a concern, if it has a lot of defragging to do then it will finish when it is done and the system checker that works in the background is a nice extra. Those nice people at IObit have made it available FREE so go ahead and give it a try, your machine will only gain from the it. This is still a beta version but they have got it right first time and look forward to any improvements they might add in the future.
Cons: Works very well, quiet and unassuming, well worth downdoading as there are no cons at all.

Pros: I won't be renewing my subscription to one of the paid applications I have been using.
Cons: Tray Tooltip duesn't work, but no big deal.

Pros: do not install the beta 4 version, if possible download and install beta 3. this previous version works fine and i would give this app 5 stars...........but leave the beta 4 version alone...........ok it works fine i will grant it that.......but you just try and uninstall it.......it took out half of my start up programs...namely all the security ones, then caused my system to fail to restart. a format and reload was the only thing that put it right. take my advice and use auslogics defrag instead. yes you have to run it manually, but that wont kill you, and its free too
