Use this audio file splitter, which is designed to take mp3 files and cut them into either a set number of files or files of a set duration. Slice can also detect a specified amount of silence and split the file at these points. This is useful where you have many songs in one mp3 (for example an entire CD in one file) and need to split them up into individual tracks. Version 2 has various bug fixes and internal upgrade to new code library.

Pros
Simple to add audio files
Has worked with batches of 8+ hour audio files into either specified time chunks or obvious silence below a given dB level
You have control of the file naming including important info like original file name part X of Y and more.
Set it and forget it. Runs overnight slicing & dicing into user chosen location
Can slice w/o affecting mp3 quality.
Before this program, I had to use my own program using an algorithm I wrote in Matlab to parse the files and trim at quiet spots. This is so much easier & doesn't require the Matlab engine to install.Cons
I didn't find anything that allows me to adjust the metadata in the same way I can adjust the file name. That would be nice since many mp3 players use the metadata for file names and ordering and it would be nice to have a handle on that.
Summary
I have a program for transfering Audible audiobooks to mp3, but I'm still left with 6 to 10 hour audio files that are a pain to listen to on my mp3 player. By breaking the files into 5 or 10 minute chunks,it becomes much more manageable to find my place in audio books and delete what I've already listened to.

Perfect for chopping up long audio book files. Options to divide into designated number of pieces, by file length, or by volume detection. All the options needed for basic file division, easy to use, GREAT!

None that I've noticed.

I've used Slice for several years I haven't seen the malware mentioned by others - of course with all software check to see what you're installing - don't install the extra junk (which I think was inserted by download.com not the software company but I could be wrong.

Simple interface, totally free, no shareware limitations.
Cons
Arbitrarily cuts tracks too short or just fails to work entirely, downloads and installs adware without warning if you click the wrong button.
Summary
If you're looking for a simple MP3 splitter, this might be good enough for you. But in my case, I needed files to be split exactly at 10 seconds each, 100% on the dot, no room for error. This software disappointingly failed three times to achieve this simple goal:
1.) I tried feeding it an uncompressed PCM WAV file (which it says it supports), but it split it into 10x as many tracks as it should have, each being just a sequence of pops. None of the original sound was there and I ended up with 1000+ useless WAV files.
2.) I tried an MP3 file, which it seemed to work with until I opened the files and realized two flaws: the files were either 9.2 or 9.5 seconds each (why it fluctuated between the two is beyond me), and there was about 0.1 seconds of silence at the end of each file which would ruin continuity between tracks.
3.) I changed MP3 output from lossless to re-encoded to see if it would fare any better, but when I tried again, it just saved a bunch of totally empty MP3 files.
Needless to say, this software failed 3 times, and I gave up. Another interesting point is the ToolBox icon at the top, which you would expect to hold some sort of settings or encoding options - no such luck. In fact, it immediately downloads and installs the developer's "NCH Toolbox" software, which basically advertises their other software - much of which is payware. The best part? This useless "toolbox" adware doesn't come with an uninstaller, so you have to remove it manually.
I have since uninstalled Slice, though, as it serves no purpose to me. Audio editors, take heed - pass this one up. -

Good interface. Splits MP3's as loss-less (same quality as source file) and re-encode mode (supporting variable bitrate and fixed bitrate.) The software has a vary customizable output name set up.
Cons
MP3 Track # output did not work, that is the software did not edit the track# field in the output file. The field was left blank.
Summary
Overall I recommend this software for anyone who has those long audio files and would like to split them into smaller files for any reason.
