Don't be fooled by Slacker Radio's freemium BlackBerry app--it's not just loafing around. After logging onto your Slacker.com account, you'll be able to choose among your favorite and custom stations, and all of Slacker.com's genre-based programming. A stream of overlapping album art stands out on the app's dark-themed interface, keeping track of the songs you've listened to and those yet to come. Familiar buttons let you pause, skip, save, and ban songs.

From the BlackBerry's menu key, you'll be able to view stations, plus artist and album info. You can also reset your messages or the entire account, and shut down the Slacker app, which will otherwise conveniently continue to play in the background while you do other tasks.

Surprisingly, multitasking is only this application's second best feature. Honors go to its ability on BlackBerry to cache stations as they play and store cached stations on a Micro SD card. The process of plugging your device into your computer to get Slacker Radio to recognize the cached stations is an unfortunate and sometimes inconvenient step we hope its developers will overcome, but other than having to be in short range of a computer, it at least is painless. When Wi-Fi wobbles and 3G cuts out, clicking on a cached station is a windfall for any serious listener. Subscribers to Slacker's Radio Plus service also get the benefit of the lyrics tab, provided by Slacker Radio Partner LyricFind where lyrics are available.

Now if we could just send custom station creations to our friends, we'd stick a fork in this app and call it done.

"Thank goodness for Slacker"

November 29, 2009  |  By jbeaul

 |  Version: Slacker Radio for BlackBerry 1.1

Pros

Cacheing radio stations is a real plus. Does the heavy lifting when you are not in a strong signal area.
Lots of choices to suit your musical taste of the day.
Able to eliminate songs you never want to hear again without wasting a "skip."

Cons

Gimme a minute. I'll think of something

Summary

I tried Pandora and was expecting that I'd use it on my BlackBerry Storm when I fell out of love with Rhapsody. But Slacker really surprised so here I am.

"Pauses between songs is unbearable, slows down my phone"

November 15, 2009  |  By MojoHawk

 |  Version: Slacker Radio for BlackBerry 1.1

Pros

It runs and (mostly) plays music, but that's about all I can say.

Cons

Program takes forever to start up. Pauses between songs is unbearable. Mediocre music selection.

Summary

I decided I wanted to get a streaming music app for my BlackBerry Curve and since both Pandora and Slacker are free decided to try them both out. My experience with Slacker did not go well. First of all, the program takes forever to start up and start playing music. Once it does play, the pauses between songs is unbearable - anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds at least. When I listen to music I like to have it playing all the time - not wondering whether the program crashed or not. To top it off - while Slacker was running on my phone, it seemed to slow down any other program that I tried to run at the same time. As for the music it picked, it was okay although everything was quite mainstream and not too surprising. If you want to discover new music and artists, I suggest Pandora as they seemed to pick a wider range of songs for my taste including a few I hadn't heard of before.

"Love This App!!!"

October 21, 2009  |  By mindhead01

 |  Version: Slacker Radio for BlackBerry 1.1

Pros

Station Caching, Album Art Display, Preprogrammed Stations, Create your own station

Cons

Causes my Storm to reboot every once in a while. This maybe more of a Storm issue. App is not available for all MP3 players, GPS devices, etc.

Summary

I have been using Slacker Radio for about a month and am only sad it took me this long to discover it. I had used Pandora periodically on my Blackberry, but the signal disruptions when not in a good cell area made it more of a novelty than something to use on a regular basis.

I thought Slacker would be more of the same. That is until I discovered I could cache the stations on my Blackberry. This feature, in my opinion, turns Slacker from novelty to killer app.

Since I started using this, my MP3 player is sitting collecting dust. Most of my music listening is done while commuting to/from work in the car. Instead of using my MP3 player I connect my Blackberry to the stereo Aux jack and listen to cached music from Slacker. The cool part about this is that when calls come in the music shuts off and I can take the call via the cars bluetooth. Very cool!

For day to day use Slacker allows my to carry 1 less device and provides me with a much greater variety of music than I have available in my own collection. In terms of audio quality when listening via the Aux jack in the car, I detect no major difference between by D2 and the Blackberry. However, when listening via headphones the Blackberry is not in the same ball park as the D2 regardless of what headphones I use. Thus, the D2 still has a place in my gadget collection but now has a diminished role due to Slacker Radio.

One last note. I know that the platform differences make it prohibitive, but I think it would be great to have Slacker functionality (cache) on any device that you might want to use as a music player (any MP3 player, GPS devices, eReaders, etc.). If you like music Slacker on the Blackberry is a must have app.

"Good, not great"

September 02, 2009  |  By drmongre

 |  Version: Slacker Radio for BlackBerry 1.1

Pros

you can listen to music anywhere on your phone. That's cool. Beats carrying two devices.

Cons

Limited content. Don't expect to hear it all. If you "love" a song, you'll hear it every single time you fire up that station. Doesn't adapt to your tastes, instead assumes because you like a song you want to hear it over and over.

Summary

Just load up your ipod. Sure...get it, run it, but bottom line i wouldn't pay for it. It'd be nice if last.fm joined Blackberry.

"Excellent if you've 3G or Wi-Fi"

July 02, 2009  |  By bluboy4

 |  Version: Slacker Radio for BlackBerry 1.1

Pros

I enjoy the variety of stations that I can get with Slacker. It comes in nice and clear without gaps if your wireless internet is 3G or Wi-Fi.

Cons

Not worth the time with 2G also known as Edge.

Summary

Find out what kind of wireless internet coverage you have in your area. I have T-Mobile and they haven't upgraded to 3G in my area so I only have 2G which not only means that slacker runs kinda slack but You Tube doesn't work well either. Fortunately, my Blackberry flip can pick up Wi-Fi and I'm wireless in my home so I can listen to stations like Slacker while I do things around the house.

"Must have app for any Blackberry"

May 07, 2009  |  By msacks2

 |  Version: Slacker Radio for BlackBerry 1.1

Pros

Great sound quality, near CD, unlimited amount of genres and artists to choose from. No commercials on the cached channels. and it is at no cost!

Cons

The app is a little heavy and slows down the system a lot, especially when switching between songs. Takes a while to start up.

Summary

Here is my bottom line. I LOVE this app. I use it basically all day long at work. No commericals, and the music that I want to listen to. If I am in the mood for 90's, I choose the 90's channel. Since I am on the EDGE network with no Wi-Fi within reach, the streaming option does not work that well for me and buffers a lot. I use the cached station option and unbelivably, a 2 GB SD card holds 13 channels. That is well over 18 hours of commerical free music, and it is all for no cost. If you can't stand terrestrial radio with all the talk and commericals, you got get this one!

"The people who give this app 1 star, are morons."

April 29, 2009  |  By PassThe40

 |  Version: Slacker Radio for BlackBerry 1.1

Pros

Everything... from caching stations, to the heart/ban option.

Cons

With the storm there is a quick glitch sound at 13 seconds, but I was assured they are working to correct this.

Summary

.. there is nothing to really complain about. They provide lyrics, artist bios, album reviews, and all kinds of album art. Very cool app and completely deserves this award.Ive been following slacker since the beginning and couldn't be more exited that it came out for the blackberry. Keep up the good work guys, you really have something special here.

"Very Cool on My Storm"

April 28, 2009  |  By RickyGoldschlager

 |  Version: Slacker Radio for BlackBerry 1.1

Pros

Free. Seemingly endless variety of music. The pre-programmed stations are better than anything I've heard on FM or XM.

Cons

Ads mixed in with the music

Summary

I installed the Slacker Radio App from BlackBerry App world a few weeks ago and I listen to it every day on my Storm during my commute. I love it. There are a few ads mixed in now and then but the music selection is so good I barely notice them. After using the heart button to mark my favorite songs now and then my stations seem to be even better than when I first started listening to Slacker. Pretty cool.
