This program provides parents with a reliable tool for shielding their children from objectionable material. We should note that to try the program, you must surrender your personal information at the developer's Web site--a requirement we found a bit objectionable.
Nevertheless, this program's features and performance impressed us. In our tests, the application proved intelligent enough to block almost all pornographic sites, yet to allow, for instance, scientific articles on nudity. We were impressed with the wide variety of filters--ranging from adult-only topics, such as sex and weapons--to potentially malicious e-mail clients and search engines. Also, you can control when a user is allowed to surf the Web. Not insignificantly, it blocks the use of popular instant-messaging applications and even multimedia players, too, though in our tests the pop-up blocker didn't work very well.
Safe Eyes is well-protected against deactivation and uninstallation, and its settings can't be changed without a password. Although many full-fledged PC-monitoring suites offer much of the same functionality, Safe Eyes 2006 still will help parents sleep easier at night.

Version: Safe Eyes 5
"Really, really painful software"
Pros: The one advantage of this over similar software (Net Nanny, Cyber Patrol) is its categorisation is far more sensible (it's the only app I can block illegal TV sites, but let legal music sites through. The other blockers have a general "Block media content" categories).
But that's it. If you don't care about that, or you simply prefer an easy to use, no pain application, choose something else.
Cons: Here's what I have to put up with on a regular basis with this software (four months use of version 5 so far, these problems occur daily):
* On boot up, Safe Eyes blocks all internet (because it can't access its servers because your broadband internet connection takes a few seconds to establish).
To correct this, open task list, kill the Safe Eyes task, try to access internet again... Safe Eyes reopens and can now find its servers, Hooray!
* Feeling nostalgic? The Safe-Eyes-talking-to-its-server makes initial connection to the internet as slow as dial up used to be. Re-live old times!
* I have disabled Safe Eyes on a few occasions using the admin password. The icon says its disabled, but it keeps on blocking. Simply reboot, disable Safe Eyes again, and the problem should go away!
* Very slow user interface because it's always talking to its remote servers. Use the wasted time to daydream about well built software.
* Error in user interface means you can't block applications apart from chat programmes.
I seriously hate this software. But it's the only one with categorisation I want so I suffer.
But heed my warning: unless you share my categorisation fetish, don't use this. This is the worst piece of software I've used this decade.

Version: Safe Eyes 5
Pros: I have read the reviews of the previous versions and have had none of the problems that they describe with version 5.0. There is a great fast responding hotline and the program has so many great features I haven't found in other similar applications and seems very hard to bypass - at least I have tried various ways to test it before I bought it and was not successful. So a full recommendation of version 5.0 from here!
