This executable works hard to reveal Windows' user passwords, but requires expert user experience to operate. SAMInside's simple-button and plain-spreadsheet-style display window mask the strength of this application. The short Help file is more than adequate for experienced users.

Operating SAMInside is a combination of finding the correct OS password file, and then applying the correct password attack. Users are expected to understand how to collect the password files. In some cases, it is necessary to boot the machine with a different OS to get to the proper password file. The app imports SAM Registry, PWDUMP, and LSASS process files. It also will load password files captured by other programs. The Help file lists the capture apps that save files with these extensions: LC, LCP, LCS, HDT, and LST. Each method offers varying degrees of difficulty to capture passwords.

Once a password set is captured, SAMInside can use a variety of processes to attack the file including brute force, distributed, mask, dictionary, hybrid, and precalculated tables. Unlike the capture process, these functions are all part of the utility. Each performs well, but with differences in speed and ability. The app can use all attacks as needed until the user is satisfied all passwords are revealed.

We liked SAMInside's comprehensive attack approach that relies more on the attack engines than a flashy interface. The demo has some listed limitations, but nothing that should stop expert users from testing this robust application.
