This power-packed application tweaks your Registry to optimize computer performance, but novices sholdn't expect much hand-holding. RegToy has a pretty nested-button-and-tab interface, which may put off some because it doesn't follow XP standards. Options are primarily of the enable/disable variety, and most changes take effect immediately.

Though the tweak options are carefully labeled, users must know the consequences of altering them, as the few onscreen notes don't provide adequate assistance. You can restore the Registry settings to the Windows default, but that's an emergency final resort, as it will undo many changes made by you and some other programs. RegToy also includes a poorly explained feature for saving and loading settings. Other features include nifty utilities such as a file renamer, a file shredder, a start-up manager, an uninstall manager, and a disk cleaner for removing unnecessary files.

You also get a Registry cleaner for removing invalid Registry entries. It's very rare to find such a powerful and free tweaking application. Intermediate to advanced users will quickly make RegToy an integral part of their toolboxes.

"A lot of useful reg tweaks...could use a better interface"

by CableguyTK on May 24, 2006

    Pros: Its free.

It comes with a lot of tweaks you know and expect, a lot of ones you never saw before, and a lot in-between.

Tweaks are enabled on the fly, no restart required, though I would suggest it after working with the program just to enable the full of effect of the tweak.

All the tweaks are organized in tabs...

Software comes with a bunch of separate programs for your disposal, like a registry cleaner and a program uninstaller (which I think is better than add/remove programs, in my opinion)

Cons: The interface is fair at best. In todays software world, people strive to make their software mimic Windows XP to a T. The developer here seems to take the route of ZillaFTP...blah...hate that program. In other words, its a pseudo-XP interface which looks like junk in my opinion. I think the developer should take a look at the free program AutoPatcher (autopatcher(.)com) to see a program which implements the XP interface as it was meant to look.

Unless I am mistaken, you either know what the tweak does or you are left out dry as there is no help file. Even a techie like me only knows maybe 80% of the tweaks...the other 20% of the tweaks I did not know or know its effect and left them unchanged. Would be nice if there was a yellow popup window when hovering over a tweak to see its effect.

I would say that 99% of the tweaks the program detects their installation status. There are a few tweaks here and there, mostly associated with the Task Bar, which arent able to be determined of their status (i.e. itll show its disabled when its clearly enabled in windows).

The setup is a little annoying...you have to tell the program where to look for the registry. For new users it would be better to automatically detect this...

"Lot's of tweaks, and it is FREE!"

    by merlot_1 on May 24, 2006

Pros: You need to know what you are doing..not for us novices.

Cons: However, You need to install Microsoft Net. Framework 2.0 for this program to function. Also, RegToy could have been set up to be more user friendly. I think this app is geared toword more advanced users, I couldn't understand half the tweaks available!
