"Intuitive interface, somewhat plain."

Pros
Easy to learn, the spreadsheet view is quick to rearrange. Exports in formats that other systems can use, and imports from various formats. ISBN and Library of Congress # look-up/auto-entry is easy. Manual entry mode is straightforward.
Cons
The manual entry mode is a little difficult to figure out. Fonts are not customizable for size, an issue for people with vision impairments. ISBN/LC finder doesn't always work for auto-entry.
Summary
This review is for version 3.04 which is a solid product, worth trying to see if it will meet your needs. I purchased the book catalog along with the video and audio cataloging software after a few days' free trial because once you learn the interface it is fairly quick to enter new titles. Older titles require manual entry which is time-consuming with the existing interface. The update from 3.03 to 3.04 went very smoothly.

I had a look at ReaderwareAW, the audio CD cataloguer.
Pros:
- Cross-platform (Mac, Win, Linux) compatibility.
- Drag-and-drop data entry from web site.
- Solid database core; it includes track artist and composer fields.
- Extensive search capability.
- Server/client option (valuable for home network).
Cons:
- Java -- it "feels wrong"; some interface elements behave in unexpected ways; sometimes it's sluggish.
- No automatic entry of mounted CDs (no support for freedb, CDDB, iTunes, CD Info.cidb).
- No support for accessing sites other than the usual English-only ones (Amazon, etc.).
- Data import limited to CSV and tab-separated; no import/export of track data (track titles, composers, etc.)
- Detail view not customisable.
- No scripting for database management tasks.
The main alternatives are CDpedia, Delicious Library, and Music Collector (iCDc and InCDius GH may also be considered). I haven't tested Music Collector because it requires an installer (which, unlike Readerware's, doesn't provide a list of what will be installed and where). ReaderwareAW is superior to Delicious Library in everything except user interface; it has a better database structure than CDpedia, but it lacks support for freedb/CDDB, and has fewer import/export capabilities.
There are three points which prevent me from choosing ReaderwareAW: (1) interface (least important, can be got over in time); (2) lack of support for mounted CDs and freedb/CDDB; (3) lack of support for importing track tags -- title, artist, composer -- from text files (most important). -

With this release the support for larger images har grown frpm non-existent to average. The program can only scroll large bookimages, not scale them. Quite annoying when one use large images of reasons other than just using them in Readerware. It cant' be that complicated a function to build in.
Apart from that. It's a good program and other programs, no matter how well-tasting, doesn't cut it...
For people with a large collection I really recommend Readerware since it won't ''lock you in'' any system. -

got it for about a year if not longer. I like it. and yes, it is not the prettiest looking (I'd love new and nicer icons) but you can adjust the interface somewhat and the main thing is, it works and is simple and stores what needs to be stored. I use it with the UPC reader and this makes life so much easier - it sucks down the data from the web inclusive images and with a large DVD collection and much bigger books collection, this is really useful. -

I've tried the others and this still offers the best features for my dollar. No, it's not the prettiest app for Mac Os X but it isn't that horrible either. I have the Palm version too which I keep with me when shopping used bookstores...don't want to buy something I already have.
For those having trouble entering DVDs or CDs make sure you have the correct version....Readerware is for books, ReaderwareAW for music, and ReaderwareVW for movies. Go to their website to download the version you want.

Readerware seems to be the most robust in terms of what it does. Books may be freeware - and a really great product, I might add, but Readerware does what I am looking for. I can drag and drop directly from my browser, order items directly from within the program. It will even do a best price search of several sites for books I want to purchase!
Only two criticisms:
1) GUI is not wonderful to look at, even with the Mac OSX default.
2) I've yet to find a way to export properly - seems to take several steps just to do a simple tab-or-comma delimited file; and even then I've got to change the extension to txt. But even with that nothing seems to work so that Bookends can import. Perhaps this will change in the future?!
Overall, though, a very good product. Can't wait to get my library of over 2000 books finally in a database. -

... only recommended for users in USA who dont own any movies from outside america. Most people in Europe cannot use this poor looking programm (amazon.de, amazon.fr not supported). There are a lot of free apps that work much better - and it's the worst looking program for macintosh i ever saw. -

Still a little clunky. Changing skins using the skin feature is right out. Causes me to Force Quit the application everytime I want to quit the program. Go with the default setting.
The online feature is great but wish this program was Cocoa based as opposed to Java.
