RAMBooster

CNET Editors' review

by: CNET Staff on November 07, 2008

Almost any computer system can benefit from additional RAM, but not all computer system owners know how (or can afford) to install more memory. RAMBooster helps alleviate the RAM jam suffered by users of older, slower systems. RAMBooster is small, effective, and best of all, free. Installation is quick, and setup is easy.

Use program defaults, or modify through the Preferences screen of the Edit menu how much RAM you'd like it to free up and at which point of resource consumption. RAMBooster will keep track of RAM usage and scrub your RAM free of flotsam left behind by closed windows and background programs. The tray icon will be red and black if your memory is fine, escalating to yellow as free memory falls. Rest your mouse pointer on the icon to see exactly how much free RAM you have. You can perform a manual RAM cleaning by right-clicking the icon in the system tray and selecting Run Now.

Multitaskers who experience bottlenecks in performance due to data saturation of their system's RAM will benefit the most from RAMBooster.

Publisher's Description

From J.Pajula:

RAMBooster monitors the amount of RAM your system is using and allows you to free it up. This will let your PC run smoother and faster, and you won't have to reboot as often. It will monitor the memory at all times, and if the amount of free RAM gets too low, it will automatically boost it for you, finding unused RAM and returning it to the free pool. RAMBooster will also monitor your CPU usage. Version 2.0 includes replaced CPU-infotext with a gauge. RB now always minimizes to the tray instead of taskbar or tray. The GUI looks almost like the old GUI, to make things easier for those who have used RAMBooster for years. Supports RAM up to 9999 MB instead of previous 99. Help-file problems fixed. Fixed conflicts with CPU-usage meter. Also some dial-up system caused to CPU-reading to freeze to 0%. This part has also been rewritten. Allows only one instance of the program. Lots of code optimization, invisible to users. It is bettter, faster, and more reliable now.

    "Not very user-friendly; old software"

    January 30, 2012  |   By Joe2496

    Version: RAMBooster 2

    Pros

If you know what you are doing (and want to take a risk), this software may be for you.

    Cons

The software is outdated (last updated sometime in 2005), the statistics don't always match up with my Intel widget, and I don't really see many results.

    Summary

It's okay, but I personally see no reason to install this program over a newer, more efficient one.

"It does what is says on the tin!"

    January 12, 2012  |   By AdrianPaulMiles

    Version: RAMBooster 2

    Pros

Frees up memory on the fly.

    Cons

None really. It should really be updated to create its own program group.

    Summary

This program is compact and definitely significantly improves the performance and speed of lesser-powered systems with less memory, unlike a lot of similar software that makes false claims.

"Really works, extends the usability of old computers."

    November 15, 2011  |   By Shocktribe

    Version: RAMBooster 2

    Pros

Set it and forget it operation.

    Cons

    The interface is old school.

    Summary

This is on the XP machine I gave to my mother to browse the internet. It has 512 RAM. It previously locked up when doing memory intensive operations such as using Google Street, but after installing this, it works better than it did when new.
You have to set up its' parameters, such as when it frees up memory and how much to free up. Don't simply install it, and expect it to know what you need. Once you set the parameters, it does everything on its' own, and works like a charm. I would even install this on my Windows 7 machine, but it isn't listed as a compatible OS.

"A Little Gem that Really Delivers"

    August 2, 2011  |   By drshi

    Version: RAMBooster 2

    Pros

Simple interface, doubles my RAM when it gets low; what more can you ask of it?

    Cons

    None at all

    Summary

My older machine relies on this little utility to keep it chugging along with acceptable speed, provided it is properly installed and configured (which sounds obvious, but failure to do this is the reason for all of the negative reviews here).

"Old Software That Works for Even New Computers"

    May 19, 2011  |

    Version: RAMBooster 2

    Pros

Nice additional tool to bring up performance and small-sized.

    Cons

Some tune-up will be required to live up to the expectation.

    Summary

So I got a RAM of about 512 MB for a 4-year-old laptop. I used to format it because it had got damn slow. After months, perhaps due to newer software who eat up more and more RAM, it got slow again and then I found that defragmentation is at best done on safe mode. OK, this worked, but still the laptop still hung up for a couple of seconds when I ran multiple software at the same. Suddenly I remembered of this software, which actually I had used to use before I used and decided to give it a shot. So I downloaded it, tuned it up a little bit, and it solved most of my remaining complaints.

Good value for such a free software, but as perhaps some users here have put it, you would want to upgrade your RAM if you happened to have more bucks.

"I have 512 megs on my 8200 dell , it does the trick!!"

    May 15, 2011  |   By packyouup

    Version: RAMBooster 2

    Pros

If my ram drops to a point where My windows start to show slowing, around 126 ram on my PC, I have it to boost automaticly another 90 megs. Vuala- good to go.

    Cons

I Keep the boost sound, in off mode.Because the Low Ram Alert Alarm, tends to get on my nerves.

    Summary

If you do more then check your mailbox, and have a small amount of RAM, and don't have the time or finances to Buy more RAM, GET this Installed on your PC. It has no maleware cookies, ect. I've been using it on My PC's for Years, No Problems, whatsoever. If you have SpyHunter 4 installed. It will want you to disable it because, Don't. Let SpyHunter4 do it's job. But you can safely let Rambooster, run its program with nothing to be concerned about.
