CNET Editors' review
This file compression tool offers all the bells and whistles required by power users, while keeping the program easy enough for novices to use. Quick Zip's button and pull-down menu helps users by ghosting unavailable commands until they're applicable. The multipane interface makes it easy to see files, folders, and archive properties. An extensive Help manual should give inexperienced users everything needed to be program power users.
Numerous options and methods to use this application means a steep learning curve for those who want to master every feature. However, operating Quick Zip can be as easy as dragging files to the interface for quick compression. In a testament to the program's flexibility, power users could play select multimedia files stored in archive files. This application easily creates standard compressed archives. Dragging a file or folder opens a dialog containing check boxes, pull-downs, and browse tools for numerous options. Users can quickly specify compression levels, actions, comments, and more or simply click a button to accept default values.
Quick Zip compresses well and fast. It offers more options than even power users will regularly use. However, it's drag-and-drop default operation will attract inexperienced users. This freeware deserves a test by anyone looking for a robust and useful compression tool.
Publisher's Description
From Joseph Leung:
Quick Zip is a powerful and fast utility that provides support to ZIP and other popular archive formats. Features include built-in support to 21 types (or 36 extensions) of archives and encoding formats; full integration to the shell, including an archive icon, which associates different archives with different icons, context menus, tool tips, drag-and-drop, and cut and paste; and a folder list, which shows the directory structure of files. You can add the current date and time in order to store and pick different versions of files in the same archive. There is a hot edit function, and you will be asked to update if you run a file and make modifications to it. This version is the first release on CNET Download.com.

"So far, VERY GOOD"
Version: Quick Zip 4.60.018
Pros
Please reference "Bottom-line Summary"
Cons
None, so far.
Summary
This pgm has a search function [file name, size, etc.] that the PKzip I paid for doesn't even have! And, it has worked very well for me - including using various * within the search.
Note: pgm did not recognize Pkzip files that have been split into segments (abo 650k). I have not tried Spans (2+gig zipped).
Also has a mass file rename function which I didn't find mentioned elsewhere.

"User Interface leaves a lot to be desired"
Version: Quick Zip 4.60.018
Pros
The program worked with the half dozen or so extensions I run into on a regular basis.
Cons
The UI looks like what I'd expect to see 10 years ago. Unfortunately it does not work that way. I've been using zip programs since the only option was the original command line. This program follows none of the conventions of its predesessors.
Summary
There are easier and more powerful programs out there. If you wonder why none of the other zip utilities function the way you think they should, this might be the program for you.

"Easy install; need practice to use"
Version: Quick Zip 4.60.018
Pros
The install was quick and easy and did not require any reboot. The user interface is clean, and viewing zip files was a snap.
Cons
Creating zip files took a little time to figure out, because it wasn't obvious which files were selected even if you use the checkbox option or view the files to be added which is in a separate tab. However, that's true of Winzip, too!
Summary
Winzip 7.0 doesn't function well in my Vista environment, and the Winzip folks no longer have free versions, so I had to hunt for an alternative. I chose QZ because of the high editor rating. I'm sure I'll get used to it, and am pleased with it so far. I haven't tried it with other formats that I use, such as GZ or TAR or ARJ (I don't even know if they're applicable for QZ!), but Winzip still works for those, so it's not an issue. I'm relieved that my Winzip/Vista problem is solved (I blame MicroSquish for that!).
I created an archive of multiple folders via QuickZip, and, at some point, attempted to add more folders and files to it, but QZ said that the archive was "bad" (wouldn't elaborate), and it refused to add any more files to it. At first, I thought the archive was write-protected, but that wasn't the case. I have no idea what's wrong, unless QZ has a space limit I'm not aware of. I was forced to go back to WinZip, which had no problem with it (which is ironic, because WZ wouldn't let me create the archive in the first place!). I'm pretty ready to dump QZ, as it has become something of a chore to use (e.g., QZ's list of folders within the archive shows a "plus" sign, but nothing happens when I click on it; instead, I have to click on the folder name to open it; that's neither intuitive nor user-friendly). I have just downloaded "ZipGenius", and will give that a shot, soon.

"Absolutely Wonderful."
Version: Quick Zip 4.60.018
Pros
Its free and works great. Continues where other zip programs stop. Will even auto repair files that winzip crashes while opening. A denfinate must.
Cons
Has a bit of trouble integrating into windows 7.1 but still runs wonderfully.
-
"Didn't work with RAR file"
Version: Quick Zip 4.60.018
Pros
Looks flash. Install straightforward.
Cons
I d/l specifically to unpack a 2 cd backup from years ago. Installed OK (though I'm half sure it nested the install directory deeper than what I'd asked for), and when I tried to open the part-1 RAR from CD, it hung. "This program is not responding"
Summary
If it can't handle multi-part RARs or large files it should check first and give a message. If it can handle big files, (I don't think it can) it should give more feedback so you know it's doing something.

"NOT SO GREAT!"
Version: Quick Zip 4.60.018
Pros
None so far.
Cons
Evidently have not had occasion so far to use this. Not sure.

"Best thing about it...it's free!"
Version: Quick Zip 4.60.018
Pros
I like everything about Quick Zip so far. First off, it was free and it doesn't expire in thirty days. There's a feature to auto start installation when you open a file. That I'm sure will come in handy!
Cons
I haven't found anything I don't like about Quick Zip yet. I don't download a ton of zip files and I'm not sure what other kinds of files it will open. I'm still pretty new to it.
Summary
Quick Zip came in very handy for me when i downloaded quite a few brushes for the GIMP photo editing program. It worked so much quicker than my previous "trial un zipper" and it looks pretty user friendly. I have had no problems with it and i deleted my previous un zipper from my computer because, well, who needs two? There are times when i go through phases with The Sims 2. Downloading custom things for my playing enjoyability. So many of them come in a zip file, I can't wait to get those things I missed out on before I had Quick Zip. I admit i was intimidated by my previous un zipper. I didn't fiddle with it very often. Onnly when my sis insisted on sending me things. LOL
