Thanks to its recently upgraded feature set (and despite its miserly trial restriction), this CD ripper and audio converter stands a notch above its shareware peers. Power CD to MP3 Maker encodes tracks in MP3, WAV, OGG, or WMA format, supports the space-conscious VBR (variable bit rate) ripping method, and can retrieve track information from FreeDB (though you have to manually activate this last feature). The latest version also has a tool for converting files from one audio format to another. Unfortunately, the program still lacks a burning utility. The menu-and-toolbar interface is simple and easy to understand. CD options are relatively robust, with controls for error checking and extraction speed. Also, the ripping speed is decent, though you should note that the demo won't rip more than 20 files--a bit stingy, in our opinion, considering how easy it is to find free CD rippers with all or almost all the features of this one. In sum, though Power CD to MP3 Maker is no match for big-name products such as Nero or Easy CD Creator, it's a better-than-average choice amid a throng of competitors.
