- Version reviewed: Portable Sleipnir 2.8.2 build 28024
This lightweight browser doesn't require installation nor does it eat up a lot of system resources, but it doesn't have any special features that will pull users away from the browser they're already using.
Be sure to save Sleipnir's folder in a location you'll remember, and not in the temporary folder that is so often the default location for downloaded files. Unlike Firefox or Internet Explorer, you won't install this program. You'll just have to click on the executable file found in its folder to launch the browser. The interface has icons that Internet Explorer users will quickly recognize, but also has a few extras that let you close tabs in various ways, and translate English to Japanese and vice versa. The File menu has more options than IE, but many of them, like the Proxy menu, could use some additional explanation. Unfortunately, the Help menu takes you to a site that's mostly in Japanese. There's a Q&A in English, but it's so poorly written that it provides little help or, in some cases, simply adds to the confusion.
Experienced users could probably figure out most of the browser's features, but there really doesn't seem to be a compelling reason to even try. Novice users will probably give it only a few minutes of their time before heading straight back to whatever browser they were using before. This freeware just isn't competitive, and the only reason to test it is if you like a challenge.
