"PithHelmet is back, baby!"
Version: PithHelmet 3.0b6
Pros
Does what it says without issue. v3 now installs great on Safari 4.04, 64 bit mode on a new MacBook pro. New menu interface, ads are gone again. woohoo!
Cons
The install didn't say that the pref pane is gone. Tidy menubar icon accesses the necessities.
Summary
I've now sent Mike my $10 registration three times (on purpose). PithHelmet is just that d*** good!
Than's for making the web a better place, Mike. -
"Works great in 32-bit mode"
Version: PithHelmet 3.0b2
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
PithHelmet works great in Safari 4, but only 32-bit mode. With all of the new stuff that Apple put into the 64-bit implementation of Safari and OS-X, it hosed PithHelmet, when Safari is running in 64-bit mode. The trick is to set Safari to run in 32-bit mode, for the time being. The developer tells us that he is doing a complete rewrite of PithHelmet, rather than try to patch the current code in hundreds of places.
SInce PithHelmet was so superb, in the past, I can appreciate that the developer would not want to release a version that was nothing more than a bunch of kludges that might be create more problems.
For the time being, I am waiting patiently... Well actually, I'm not all that patient. I really miss Pith Helmet, but I really like the faster 64-bit Safari. I keep coming out to VersionTracker, in the hope that I'll find that the 64-bit PithHelmet has been released. -
"Finder window keeps popping up!"
Version: PithHelmet 2.8.5
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
While browsing many websites (including THIS one), a Finder window will pop-up because PithHelmet blocked something. The Finder window takes the foreground focus & is very, very annoying and really defeats the purpose of speeding up the browsing & getting rid of pop-ups/ads. Just getting to where I type this took closing that Finder window 3 times. No way! This is a deal breaker for me. I could only imagine if I were to let someone use my computer. They'd get confused immediately with this behavior.
It is for this reason that I cannot recommend this product. Also, disabling PithHelmet doesn't really disable it 100%. I shouldn't have to find it from within the Administrator's Library/App Support.... just to hack it or delete it temporarily to browse a site properly. -
"Superb, Must-Have for Safari 4.0.x"
Version: PithHelmet 2.8.5
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
With OS 10.5.8 and Safari 4.0.3, Mike Solomon's Aug. 2009 release of PithHelmet 2.8.5 works like the proverbial charm.
Without PithHelmet, I would opted to retreat from Safari to Firefox, which has its own excellent add-on for preventing the visually disturbing flashers and other distractions from slowing down loading time and causing eye-aches.
Respectfully, Norm -
"Caution ? hidden snags"
Version: PithHelmet 2.8.4
Summary

Reviewers here and comments in usenet sing the praises of Pith Helmet. So why am i about to trash it and fail to recommend it?
First, the installer cannot find Safari on my computer because it is not in the Applications folder. I refuse to be dictated to by developers as to where I must place my apps. i have too many for that.
However, i did want to see how Pith Helmet behaves so I temporarily moved Safari up two levels of folders, so it could be found.
But no, PH is still too stupid to find Safari. Why? Because i have it renamed to "Safari 3.2.3.app". This Pith Helmet thing is _really_ stupid!
So, quit Safari, rename it and try again. Yes, PH installed this time. And a configuration window was conveniently opened.
Rename Safari back to how I want it and move it back to its normal home. Suddenly the configuration window has vanished so PH is still pissed off with me. And I it.
Grrr. Having lost interest (and faith in the competence of the author), i wanted to uninstall it. Well, too bad because there is no uninstall option. The final insult.
Every app that is installed with a custom installer rather than just dragging, should have an uninstall option. And every app must accept my filing system. This is MY computer and I'll damned well work the way i want.
The Apple installer is a wonderfully versatile tool. Why oh why do some developers ignore its functionality? Even Adobe is a dismal disappointment in this regard, demanding that we use their installer, slow as a snail, and no chance to put the apps where you want them.
Yes Pith Helmet might (or might not) be a useful tool. But it's too stupid and too authoritarian for my blood. Now I am forced to waste valuable time manually searching for files it installed and I suppose I must also download a fresh copy of Safari in case it's been patched by code from a source i have no faith in.
This is totally unacceptable and I'm damned grumpy.

"Problems with Trick/Hack"
Version: PithHelmet 2.8.2
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
If you use 2.8.2 on Safari 3.1 using the various "tricks" you will notice that some sites views are corrupted bigtime by having the "Block Filtered Content" open selected in Pithhelmet. Switch it off and on to test. Two sites I know of that this is a problem on is www. gi zm od o. net and www. my yahoo . com -
"New Version - Too many problems"
Version: PithHelmet 2.8.2
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
With the new version, there are too many problems under v10.4.10 and .11.
I use site specific preferences to keep images from loading on certain sites. 2.8.2 seems to randomly ignore these preferences and, worse yet, applies them to other sites.
When this happens, "Reload Unfiltered" doesn't work (either via the key-combo or the menu selection) - the page just reloads without images. I have to shut off PithHelmet, load the page, and then re-enable.
This is on two different machines (Dual G5 and iBook), both currently running 10.4.11. I have completely remove PithHelmet and reinstalled (preferences included) - problem still exists.
The author doesn't seem to care at all about this problem as I have sent several emails with detailed reports and screenshots and haven't received any response.
Prior to 2.8.2 and the Safari v3.0 debacle, I would have given PithHelmet 5-stars across the board. -
