Google's Picasa: Peer at it closely and you'll find an app teeming with features that do everything from import to edit to upload to share photos and videos online. Let your eyes glaze and that feature set blur, and Picasa is still as easy to use for the photo management basics as it was when it was first conceived, before it came into Google's fold. Firmly in the consumer camp, Picasa doesn't strive to be the most powerful image manager or editor in its class, but for all its tools, this freeware middleweight does hold the distinction of being the most easygoing option for a wide swatch of home users.

Picasa scans your hard drive for photos and organizes them by folder, making it easy to find pictures and videos taken over the years. Editing tools include light adjustment, straightening, effects, and retouchers to cover over blemishes. You can annotate and geotag photos, and can turn pictures into collages, and pictures and video clips into movies. But where Picasa really shines is in its online storage and sharing tools. Syncing and sharing buttons on the album level let you keep folders up-to-date on your free, online Picasa Web album--all without leaving the desktop app. The same goes with sharing. Select contacts and Picasa will e-mail them the link to the online photo album as it simultaneously uploads photos to that very album.

The latest version integrates facial recognition technology that spots faces and lets you identify them with an address from your Gmail account, or just with a name. Although time consuming at first, the genius of this exercise in visual metadata is revealed the next time you hunt for an image and find yourself searching not by an individual album, but by the name of the subject within that sought-for snapshot.

There is one caveat: Picasa eats a lot of memory, so be wary of a performance drag, oh ye of modest memory. In every other respect, this free photo editor and organizer program is an excellent choice for amateur shutterbugs with plenty of photos to lightly edit and share.

"Useful for normal usage"

October 14, 2009  |  By Redfirebee

 |  Version: Picasa 3.5 Build 79.69

Pros

- It helps you find pictures on your PC easily and without delay
- Features for correcting and amending pictures
- Neat collage function
- You can directly order e.g. a print-out or gifts
- For upload to Picasa online albums a must

Cons

- To search the whole PC for photos is not recommendable, especially if you have games installed

Summary

If you want to use photo online albums for storage or presentation, Picasa is surely a neat program, as you do not have to upload photos manually. And it is free. If you are looking for some graphics program or to assemble a photo line, there might be also other good or better programs out there.
I found the "people manager" a bit weird after doing the update to 3.5. Picasa automatically started to look for photos with faces and if you tag those photos, give them names, Picasa supposedly looks for similar faces. For people who are interested in administrating their extensive family photos, probably an interesting feature.
I find the notion of automatic person identification weird and switched that function off...

"I like the program very well."

October 14, 2009  |  By FranandJane

 |  Version: Picasa 3.5 Build 79.69

Pros

Very easy to edit photos and to modify them

Cons

I don't like the way that it sucks up photos off of my desk top. I'd rather add them
myself when I am ready to.

"As good as the rest of this type of program"

October 13, 2009  |  By cityranch

 |  Version: Picasa 3.5 Build 79.69

Pros

It combs my drives and finds pictures very good and brings up a folder of photo in the blink of an eye.

Cons

It is hard to find one picture among the number of unasked for photos it displays on a search.

Summary

For me it is very hard to find where I am in a folder of photos, near beginning-middle or the end. I depend on an pointer as to where I am in a large search. I feel lost in a sea of photos plus getting more photos shown than I ask to see. It seems to be a good program and I plan of learning how to float and give the program a good chance of being a good program for me to use.

"very functional free program. a number of great options"

October 12, 2009  |  By pickles223

 |  Version: Picasa 3.5 Build 79.69

Pros

particularly like the face recognition. greatly speeds up separating and identifying people photos. shows individuals from photos of more than one person -- how cool is that?

Cons

would like to be able to: "ignore" multiple photos to speed up removal of duplicates. see file/folder/location on unnamed people photos to aid identification. have option to add photos to a different folder while keeping them in the original.

Summary

this is a much better program than the programs i have bought and paid fortunes for.
