Editors' Review

This photo organizer strikes us as the picture of simplicity, a hairy task considering that Picasa 3 stacks on over a dozen more features and refinements to improve the editing, creative, and sharing options onto what has for years been a solid consumer app. Although not the most powerful image manager on the block, Picasa has the distinction of being the most easygoing.

Picasa's editing tools now include a retoucher to cover over blemishes and an improved red-eye corrector that detects and fixes all orbs emitting a magenta glow, with fairly good results.

Picasa really shines when it comes to organizing, uploading, and sharing pictures. New syncing and sharing buttons on the album level let you keep folders up-to-date on your Picasa Web album without leaving the desktop app. The same goes with its neighboring 'Share' button, which uploads photos online and e-mails your contacts the link from Picasa's interface.

The latest version also greatly improves the collage tool and adds a basic movie maker that lets you intersperse a wide range of video with stills. Though we love the concept, the bare-bones tool needs work, and greater choice of outputs--right now it only churns out WMV files. One other caveat: Picasa eats a lot of memory, so be wary of a performance drag, oh ye of modest memory. In every other respect, this free photo editor and organizer program is an excellent choice for amateur shutterbugs with plenty of photos to share.

"Best complete photo software on this site"

March 03, 2009  |  By tntrapper

 |  Version: Picasa 3.1 Build 70.73

Pros

Very user friendly, interface is clean and non-cluttered, imports your pics from other files yet leaves the original where it found it

Cons

none so far

Summary

Too many features to list here but anything you need to do to enhance, edit, file or share your photos is included in Picasa. The only thing I had to get used to was the fact that it was actually free.

"Simple, and powerful, but room for improvement"

February 28, 2009  |  By SlagarNZ

 |  Version: Picasa 3.1 Build 70.73

Pros

Very user friendly. Nice smooth-scrolling effect through folders/albums in the main pane. Great all round feature set. Excellent web integration options. Comes with a nice lightbox-style stand alone picture viewer (with Picasa 3).

Cons

Awful Folder explorer. Don't like the default "full picture view". Simplistic interface may annoy more advanced users. Stand alone photo viewer stylish, but could function better. Some annoying bugs which remain unfixed.

Summary

Picasa is a great tool for managing your photo and image collections. The user interface is well-geared towards simplicity, and is very easy to pick up. Certainly a perfect choice for people without too much technical experience, but want something to organise their photos.
The simple interface doesn't do away with power either - Picasa has many features for more advanced users (not all of which are obvious at first, due to the interface layout), that have become almost expected from photo organising/viewer software, such as batch renaming, color correction options, red eye removal etc. Picasa also goes over and above what most other software in this category offers, and gives you some nice web and blog integration options also. Other options such as tagging, and favorites also work well, and are configured to be in a simple config txt file in each folder.

As a more advanced user and hobbyist digital photographer, I found the simplistic interface to bug me somewhat. Even though it has some customisation options, the default install has many features I don't personally have interest in (the heavy web-integration theme being one). The folder explorer bugged me a lot too - which has some bugs, and gets compacted when you start searching, and leaves you clicking "Back to View All" to reset it. I'd much prefer a traditional, predictable, windows explorer folder view, which is always the same from your root picture folder. This also seems to be quite buggy when you use hidden hidden folders and password protection on folders.
The stand alone lightbox-style picture viewer is clean and stylish also, but it seems to lack intuitive hotkey support, and has some bugs with refreshing the image list. This also seems to load the whole folder in its entirety at once, and bogs down quickly on older computers.

Picasa is good, but may not be for everyone. It's a perfect choice for people with less technical experience, and those from a more tech-savvy background will also enjoy what it offers, but may get annoyed by some aspects of it.
I personally have used Picasa for quite a while, but am looking for something more taylored to advanced user/photographer needs. After evaluating other software on the market, FastStone Image Viewer seems to be a better fit for people like myself.

"Problems still to iron out?"

February 22, 2009  |  By spersephone

 |  Version: Picasa 3.1 Build 70.73

Pros

Great product when it works - new ability to trim videos before uploading which is absolutely brilliant.

Cons

I have lost all pictures and had broken thumbnails twice now. I uninstalled, deleted the database and reinstalled, the next day the same thing has happened. I am currently reinstalling again, but I will not be happy if this is a regular occurrence.

Summary

Great product that is so easy to use. However, with the new bugs I am experiencing, I suspect it was not yet ready to be released. I have never had such problems with the previous versions.

"Great software and It's Free!"

February 22, 2009  |  By ryank82

 |  Version: Picasa 3.1 Build 70.73

Pros

It's Free, Great organizing features, Geo tagging, Fast

Cons

None I can think of

Summary

This is a great alternative to Adobe Lightroom or even Aperture on the Mac. If you only need to do light modifications to your photo's the learning curve is very minimal. The user interface seems really fast and snappy. Slideshow, Emailing, Blog, Geotagging are all built in to the interface. Also did I mention its FREE ! Great Job Google!

"Great - and free!"

February 12, 2009  |  By outtheback

 |  Version: Picasa 3.1 Build 70.73

Pros

Very easy to use, editing tools such as cropping, touch up, red eye removal all excellent, collage production very good. One of the better free software downloads IMO.

Cons

Slideshow, slideshow and slideshow. Also found occasionally pictures added to hard drive are not automatically transferred/synched to Picasa library as they should.

Summary

Overall Picasa 3 is excellent but the slideshow production tool could do with an overhaul. Only allows you to add 1 mp3 file (ie. song) to any particular slideshow which means you have to create a series of 3 minute slideshows then merge them together if you want a slideshow of longer duration. Would be far better if you could produce a 1 hour slide show then add 20 mp3 files to it. Also, once you burn the slideshow to a DVD it will not play on your standard home DVD player. To produce a DVD which will play I had to use Roxio 'My DVD' to burn the slideshow I created. Not sure why Picasa includes a burner which produces DVD's which you can not play. Oh well, if it was perfect I guess it wouldn't be free.
