CNET Editors' review

This photo organizer strikes us as the picture of simplicity. Although not the most powerful image manager on the block, Picasa has the distinction of being the prettiest, with an easygoing demeanor we don't usually associate with good looks.

Picasa has only gotten better over time. Its editing tools now allow you to see your photo tweaks as you make them--no more rendering delays. Multiple levels of undo make it a snap to revert to the original image if you decide you don't like a certain change.

Picasa really shines when it comes to organizing pictures, with improved search capabilities and a time-line slide-show function for beautifully displaying your photo collection. It also automatically resizes your photos for e-mailing. You get several options for storage and sharing. You can burn albums to DVD or CD, print pictures at home, or use links to several online companies, including Ofoto and Shutterfly.

The latest version provides easy access to Picasa Web Albums, so it's easy to post your photos online, and supports geotag information. One caveat: Picasa eats a lot of memory by default, and even more each time you add a thumbnail, so users with older computers may experience a performance drag. In other respects this free program is a good choice for amateur shutterbugs with plenty of photos to share.

"watch out for included spam downloads"

    March 16, 2014  |   By jfloydo

    Version: Picasa 3.9.137 Build 118

    Pros

Simple but fairly complete photo editing software

    Cons

You have to read every single thing it prompts you for while downloading so you don't get hit with a virus/bug/trojan/etc. Even so there are things you are given the may as well be virus's. You have to go to your program dirs and check for spam programs ASAP to stop the madness.

    "OUT OF CONTRO"

    February 2, 2014  |   By rjmastrianni

    Version: Picasa 3.9.137 Build 81

    Pros

I wouldn't know of any, as son as I opened it went into spastic auto uploading mode that would not stop. I have thousands of picture in several organized Albums. I only wanted to upload videos and I had no way of stopping the program from just uploading every image file it came across.

    Cons

You cannot stop it once it begins to load for the first time. NOT GOOD FOR LARGE PHOTO ALBUMS. I pay for a Photobucket account instead. I was tired of Facebook's poor organization.

    Summary

If you have a small amount of photos it might work fine. It is fast but you have little control. I safely deleted it from my computer after a short 20 minute ordeal. I hope nothing got deleted. I have no idea where t stored the thumbnails it creates to view the photos unless it just uses links to the original.

"Organized. Not always an option on sites. Can be complex."

    December 19, 2013  |   By options1

    Version: Picasa 3.9.137 Build 69

    Pros

    -organized folders: folders, albums, etc.
    -syncs online photos
    -can add analytic to pictures
    -shared links
    -attached to Google+ and Dropbox
-can upload pictures and make YouTube video right there and then
-can manipulate photos to add/delete or create new
    -free
    -SEO Google friendly and supported-rewarded
-works with image searches using Google (maybe Bing and Yahoo too)

    Cons

-not as easy to sync desktop folders/online albums
    -confusing
    -must work well with Google+
    -changes versions
-not always clear-takes long time to understand elements/benefits
-no good editor (old one wasn't great)
-poor "tools" in terms of collages and slideshows
-doesn't pull tags or similar photos/themes without specific direction, so you have to know ahead each picture goes where even when related
-folders not always easy to find
-not always preferred photo imaging program, so for instance, Yahoo pushes Flickr. If not preferred by site, not sure how to integrate
-could use higher quality tools to really make the photos "pop"

    Summary

I have been using Picasa for many years. I am the first to admit, I have never taken the time to learn all the pros/cons of program like most I use. But since I have continued to use it and recommend to clients, I feel strongly it's an overall positive and helpful program especially with it's connection to Google and Google+. There are features I'd like to see, like editor, more tools, easier desktop/online sync, storage for links used often such as gallery for clients. Not so many little specifics, etc. BUT, I have always found Picasa THERE for me no matter how long it's been since I was there last. I also enjoy using the online sync feature when developing my photos at CVS (not Walgreens). It's free; it's convenient; it's good for my business of organic SEO and online marketing for small businesses because it helps me build consistent reputations and business image by really connecting content and images. Comments on pictures can be used to tie in with clients blogs and RSS, and the YouTube video though simple (can do lots more with other programs), for a clean, simple and fast decent product to hit the internet--important for most of my small, contractor-type clients who want nothing to do with online "junk", and so I can make it fast, simple and pump up the analytic and tracking so they see results. I truly believe with as much success as I've had with this product, given some actual "learning" time-meaning reading each section, etc., I could make this program a powerful tool-even more than now for clients which I intend to do. Have been using other programs, some using for many years such as Flickr. While a couple are great and I'll use as needed, I plan (at this time) to make Picasa my number one choice and recommendation for clients and consumers who follow my "best" lists for apps, programs and companies. Hope for more updates soon, esp. the editing!! Thank you. Diana Smith, Website Designs by Diana, Simple SEO Websites and SEO Powered WEbsites-all organic based.

"Picasa silently and unrecoverably destroys photos"

    December 15, 2013  |   By Michel Merlin

    Version: Picasa 3.9.137 Build 69

    Pros

Picasa performs many spectacular, well done and very useful actions, one wonderful (Face recognition)

    Cons

Picasa "corrects", but wrongly, ALL photos it finds on your HD or connected device (SD card, ext HD), WITHOUT ASKING OR TELLING

    Summary

A catastrophic bug in Picasa silently and unrecoverably destroys your photos
    ~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~- ~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~- ~--~--~--~--~--~--~--~
I uninstalled Picasa in 2010 after being hit by a scary action that Picasa was doing silently in the background and without my knowledge.

By http://www.google.com/search?q=Picasa+corrupting+photos you will find a few others badly hurt by the same flaw or a very similar one; but those results are apparently severely "cleaned" so the reality is probably much bigger. The best detailed explanation I found was posted by "Uncle Code Monkey" in http://www.blackmoonit.com/2010/10/sometimes-picasa-3-will-corrupt-my on 01 Oct 2010, of which hereafter is a presentation and resume.

Apparently around the update that brought the (wonderful) face recognition, Picasa also added a catastrophic bug: when applying to a JPG file some changes theoretically benign but implying updates to its EXIF data (like adding a caption, rotating the picture, etc), Picasa adds or rewrites these EXIF data in the JPG file in the wrong place or way or length, causing VAST RANGES of the OTHER data in the file to get no more found by the internal indexes of the file, or even displaced or partially overwritten. The result is a grave corruption, e.g. the entire photo or a large vertical or horizontal stripe is replaced by an uniform one, most often gray. In my case, I had taken a photo of the writing on the horizontal face of a grave, so the camera was looking up to down; Picasa had decided to "correct" the orientation and did it the wrong way; when I tried to turn it the right way I got unexpected results, found that no other program could change or correct anything to it, so I retrieved the (unaffected) original from my SD card, and started to search Google for the issue.

Such corruption is almost impossible to correct: "Uncle Code Monkey" could, after a long and hard work, recover the most part of ONE photo, but this is unfeasible by regular users on a practical scale.

The corruption affecting the original JPG file, the photo remains corrupt and unrecoverable no matter what program is used (Picasa, Chrome, IE, Paint, IrfanView, etc).

Even worse, Picasa starts automatically and silently to "improve" ALL of your photos as soon as it can get to them, no matter on your HD or on a plugged SD card or other peripheral, and to not slow your PC, this is done in the background and in idle time. As a result, you may become aware of the problem long after it has occurred, so you may be unable to recover them through another backup (if you backed your photos or albums when they were already corrupt).

Now Google not only never admitted the bug, never replied to questions, never even mentioned it, but closed all the forum entries about it; so there is no hope at all for a cure from Google, hence what is left is only workarounds.

The only reliable workaround I found was to uninstall Picasa, which I did in 2010, and I never retried it since. I highly recommend the same to everyone.

    "Doesn't handle large directories"

    November 4, 2013  |   By Richardhg

    Version: Picasa 3.9.0 Build 136.20

    Pros

Nice for small directories. If your camera fragments your directories based on the date you loaded the information to your PC, then it works well.

    Cons

    * Scary automatic upgrades for mobiles and PC's.

    * 32 bit only, so it is usel;ess for big directories.

Unfortunately, with Google+, and Google's desperate attempts to get everything into the cloud, privacy is a real issue. Google changer their software without notification, and for no good reason, they mess with the user interface. So if you have private photographs ion your collection that you really don't want out there on the Internet, make sure you exclude those directories from Picasa's prying eyes, and auto-processing, or they may well end up on your Google+ page.

Picasa cannot process any directory larger than 4 Gigabytes, which is the limit of 32-bit addressing. At the time of writing, (November 2013) Picasa is not available as a 64-bit version (it installs as an x86 32-bit program. So any directory over 4 gigabytes, it will crash when viewing.

    Summary

Just horribly managed. Google have learned nothing from the arrogance of other companies, and are opening a big doorway for another company to steal their thunder in picture/video processing. But the other players who could move into this area are hopelessly out to lunch. Microsoft sends me screaming into the night with their insanity, and the other established companies are not even in the running with their lack of awareness of the opportunities.
