CNET Editors' review
Picasa Web Albums is Google's Web photo-hosting service. Users get 1GB of free hosting, and images can be uploaded and manipulated using Picasa, Google's free desktop photo management application. Users who want additional storage can shell out up to $500 a year to bump up the hosted space to 400 times the size of the free hosting service.
Much like everything else Google, Picasa is exceptionally straightforward to use, with a tabbed interface offering three options--My Photos, Favorites, and Explore--the last of which lets you browse the public photo library. Next to the tabs, you'll find a prominent Upload button for adding photos to your albums, which you can set to various levels of privacy. Within your albums, you have the option to view a slideshow, share via e-mail, make a collage or movie, order prints, and edit various aspects.
We really like the integration between the desktop and Web application. Similar to .Mac and iPhoto, Picasa makes it really simple to take photos from your desktop and publish them online for others to see. We're also fans of the built-in geotagging that lets you set where photos were taken either by single photo, or by entire albums. It's a great way to browse photos if you feel like exploring.
Picasa 3:Publisher's Description
From Google:
Transfer, find, organize, edit, print, and share images, all with this easy-to-use product. Watch Picasa automatically organize all your pictures into elegant albums by date. Having all your photos in one place means no more time wasted searching for folders or files. The program works with JPEG, GIF, BMP, PSD, and movie files and is compatible with most digital cameras; it detects your USB driver and imports pictures into albums. Editing tools include cropping (standard or custom), removal of red-eye, and enhancing--even switching from color to black and white. Create slide shows set to your MP3s. Integration with Picasa's free Hello instant picture-sharing software lets you share hundreds of photos in seconds and chat in real time. E-mail photos with Picasa's built-in client to take the guesswork out of compressing images, and order photo-lab quality prints or print at home with no mistakes. You can also make instant backups to CD (or to other hard drives) of your photo collections, to organize your photos using labels and stars (just like with Gmail), to write captions for all pictures, and to organize videos as well as pictures.
What's new in this version: Version 3.8 build 117.24 has fixed various translation issues and face Movies now correctly display captions.

"This is a Godsend! 'The best things in life are free!""

It keeps improving every time, especially the self extraction of all pics from your disc/web albums.
Cons
None whatsoever.
-
"super great"
Version: Picasa 3 3.8 build 117.24

Cons
I cannot find fault with it.
Summary
I like everything about Picasa. I am having fun with it
-
"Best quick photo manager and work tracker out there."
Version: Picasa 3 3.8 build 117.24
Pros
So useful. Captures, sorts, stores, makes editing easy, locates files on drives. This program is almost good enough to be the only one you'll ever need. More sophistication like www.forestphoto.com would be handy.
Cons
Cannot specify file size downloads, from originals to YouTube or whatever. Have to use preset defaults. Does not allow easy user manipulation of files for different uses like publication, PowerPoint, and so on.
Summary
Great! program and very useful for home use. Makes organization challenged dorks into photo filing super heroes. I highly recommend this product. It's important that it remain free software. Free means more users and more income from ads.
-
"Easy to use, reduces quality."
Version: Picasa 3 3.8 build 117.24
Pros
It is very easy to use with a variety -- although not as wide a selection as others like gimp and photoshop -- of tools.
Cons
It reduces quality of pictures noticeably but not significantly especially when placing text.
Summary
Ease for quality, it is definitely the easiest to use photo editor I've used. It is a good program for a free alternative, although bested by other photo editors in terms of available tools and preservation of image quality.
-
"Does everything I want, and free to boot."
Version: Picasa 3 3.8 build 117.24
Pros
For me, it does all the tweaking I need and automatically sets folders, dates etc. Great.
Cons
None that I have encountered.
Summary
Recommend it to all - does the job well, is easy to use, resource friendly and free!

"New version with PicniK is Rubbish"
Version: Picasa 3 3.8 build 117.24
Pros
All the functions except 'Picnic'
Cons
'Picnik' does not work. This version is not as good as previous version
Summary
The addition of Picnik has completely over ridden my previous version so that I can no longer edit the text originally added to pictures, and I am unable to retrieve the previous version of Picassa. I used to be able to hide text and bring it back but can no longer do it - Picnik has over ridden this facility.
-
"Best program, I have 3 but always go back to Picasa"
Version: Picasa 3 3.8 build 117.24
Pros
Keeps me organized, easy to use, keeps on getting better and better.
Cons
When I edit the pics I wish it would just automatically save when done, unless I'm missing something, I have to go to file and save them every time.
-
"Sorts my pictures: love to use!!"
Version: Picasa 3 3.8 build 117.24
Pros
It sorts by dates, it keeps me organized, I spent all this money on Coral, etc. and ened up with this. I added the cost of Picnik and now my pictures are fun and I enjoy planning photo books, etc.
Cons
I wish they would combine with Picnik so I could purchase both instead of paying for Picnik too. They duplicate the pictures too often and so I delete a lot.
Summary
For free, for fun and making my pics look great I thank you Google. I use it weekly. The sorting program could be easier because I want it more simple so I don't have to think about it so much. I would like to be able to sort and save easier. But I would not like to be without it.
