Editors' review

PhotoScape is a free image editor that is designed to be fun and easy to use. It not only resizes, edits, and tweaks your digital snapshots and other image files but also creates slideshows and animated GIFs, captures screenshots, combines and splits images, and more. PhotoScape can do lots of fun things to your pictures, and its modules, circular feature selector, and video tutorials take care of the "easy" part.

We mentioned PhotoScape's unique, circular module selector, which duplicates and adds to the features on the program's toolbar, except the first tab, PhotoScape, which is the home screen (though all the tools are available on the toolbar via the toolbar menu). Another unique and interesting feature displays a photo grabbed from Flickr. You can click to change the image or turn the feature off. The Viewer tool's tree view and thumbnails helped us make quick work of finding and loading our images; the tree view persists in the upper left corner, too, when you move on to PhotoScape's various features, starting with the Editor. The Editor collects the most frequently needed editing tools in a console, but the compact view hides a plethora of options; for instance, the Filter menu has 25 items, and nine of those items have submenus. The Editor tools can do everything from adding objects to removing moles: we had quite a laugh when the random wallpaper image we opened turned out to be screen legend Anne Francis and her famous mole! But we could also paint, draw, stamp, and make mosaics out of our images.

More fun: Animated GIFs are easy to make with PhotoScape, including resizing images, changing the timing and alignment, and automatically resizing all photos to the first image's size. The Page editor includes a huge range of templates for creating frames, borders, and collages, while the pop-up Raw Converter converts RAW images from DSLR cameras into JPEGs. A cool Paper Print tool prints letters, music sheets, calendars, planners, and more. Be sure to check out the online Face Search tool. PhotoScape promises and delivers a fun photo tool that's also easy to use.

    "DANGER: MALWARE"

    July 26, 2014   |   By dkump

    Version: PhotoScape 3.6.5

    Pros

The program disappeared after my antivirus program wiped the malware file. I don't know what happened, but good riddance!

    Cons

I installed this without reading the reviews and upon installation I got an immediate notification of malware. It took me all morning and afternoon to rid and rescan this computer. Come on CNet! You're supposed to be watching out for these kinds of things.

    Summary

    Danger, Will Robinsion, Danger!

    June 19, 2014   |   By spartan100

    Version: PhotoScape 3.6.5

    Pros

Have a lot of functions, organized well

    Cons

Well the pros are also the cons.. the app is well organized but in another way then a traditional photo editor so if you work with a traditional photo editor in the past you'll need time to adjust

    "Excellent Program"

    March 03, 2014   |   By AJOHMSS

    Version: PhotoScape 3.6.5

    Pros

Offers many of the features that one would find on programs like Photoshop but considerably more accessible.

    Cons

Malware and adware throughout the latest version.

    Summary

Get an older version of Photoscape and NOT the latest. This program is now ADsupported and will drive you crazy with what it downloads onto your computer.

"Warning! I should have listened to Surfer22's post!"

    January 25, 2014   |   By BeWaryOfCNET

    Version: PhotoScape 3.6.5

    Pros

I have no Pro regarding CNET PhotoScape Download

    Cons

This CNET download of PhotoScape was full of tricks. On 01/25/2014, I changed plus-sign boxes to minus-sign boxes to not download other programs and it downloaded them anyway. On my Control Panel I was able to get rid of most of them. But CWA Reminder 6 WeCare.com, when I tried to remove it, Windows 7 asked me if I wanted this program to make changes to my computer. More foul tricks! I, of course, did not do this. Fortunately, my last good configuration was 01/21/2014 and CWA.. etc. no longer showed up on my Control Panel.

Then I made an new Acronis True Image Back-Up of this last good configuration on a portable drive. I already had an Acronis True Image Back-Up on a partition from many months ago.

I trusted CNET because it says that it has made sure that its downloadable programs are Malware-&-Virus-Free. Strange to say, but months ago on another Computer, I downloaded PhotoScape from a site, whose name & URL I don't remember, and I got a clean download. So what gives?

"Best of the Picture Editor Multi-Tools"

    January 24, 2014   |   By whisper1321

    Version: PhotoScape 3.6.5

    Pros

Able to do most editing and batch changes without changing applications.

    Approachable interface.

    Cons

Unable to figure out how to make something transparent, but that's one out of 50 things.

    Summary

I have used PhotScape for a few years now and am very happy to have a single program vs four for editing, creating, resizing, and batch jobs.
