Novice-friendly but with features for the expert and free archiving tools rarely cover all those bases, but PeaZip hits a home run.
Operating PeaZip is as easy as dragging files. Drop a ZIP file on the interface and PeaZip goes into decompression mode. Drop a regular file and it opens the archiving screen. Well-labeled buttons and simple functions make both processes quick and painless. Adding files and folders is also quickly accomplished using function buttons and traditional file browse tools.
Novice users will be able to use default settings to create well-made archives. Experienced users will like the easily set options. Each well-designed interface includes option tabs that contain simple pull-downs, radio buttons, and text boxes to set compression levels, methods, dictionaries, and even encryption. Most users will find this app one of the most simple to set exactly to their preferences.
Anyone looking for a small and useful archiving tool should give PeaZip a test. Most won't continue their search.
Publisher's description
From Giorgio Tani Software :PeaZip is an OS-portable archiver tool (released for Windows and Linux); it supports it's native Pea archive format (featuring compression, splitting and flexible encryption and integrity check schemes) and other mainstream formats, with especial focus on handling open formats. Full support: 001 (raw file split/join), 7z, 7zip sfx, Bzip2, Gzip, Pea, Tar, Zip.
Browse/extract-only support: Z. PeaZip doesn't follow the Explorer-like interface paradigm; the interface is more similar to a CD/DVD-burner application, allowing the user to: - save and restore layout of archives (input files and folders list) to speed up definition of archiving and backup operations; - save job definition (as plain text, to be used in any script language); - have a detailed job log after each operation. The interface is fully skinnable (skins can be customized and saved as plain text to be re-edited as freely as possible) and uses customizable transparency.

Version: PeaZip 1
Pros: I used the program times ago and now, supporting more compression formats, it's definitely better. A good program!

Version: PeaZip 1
Pros: A file archiver that doesn't look like a WinZip clone, finally!
Support many different archive formats (.zip, .tar, .7z...) and gives useful split files and encryption features.

Version: PeaZip 1
Pros: While I usually stay on 7-zip, I like this archiving software, as a second choice, because it supports the archive formats I usually deal with, with an alternative approach to archiving and an efficient interface that comes handy in many situations; as a nice bouns, it is free and open source.
