For many Mac users, the Finder provides plenty of functionality. But if you're looking for more powerful control over your files and desktop, Path Finder can be an attractive alternative. This standalone file browser complements and improves on the Finder, with scores of useful integrated features. The program lets you quickly access favorites; view the contents of almost any file in a preview drawer; and move files more easily using the Shelf and Drop Stack. Other features include the ability to compress and decompress files; mount disk images; view invisibles, securely delete files, and work from the command line. You can even put a Trash on your desktop. This latest version is Tiger-only but adds several important new features. This Finder alternative is great for those who have always wanted more control over customizing Mac OS X. Watch the CNET video review of Path Finder:

Version: Path Finder 4.1.1
"This is the God of File Browsers."
Pros: Way too many to name all of them. I'll throw in some highlights.
Columns view. Not an improvement over the Finder, but better than any other file browsers I've seen.
Tabs. Yup. You can view folders in tabs, and even save tab sets. Only other file browser I know that can do that is Konqueror on Linux.
Shelf to store commonly used folders on.
File History
Folder History
Built in command line.
Built in text editor
Shelf for volumes.
Ability to add folder contents in side bar.
Firefox/Safari style bookmarks bar.
Shows path for folder.
Can easily change how data is displayed.
A stack to temporarily drop files before moving to another folder.
Cons: It's not free.
I've had a few issues mounting some volumes.
The shelf on the save menu will use the shelf from the Finder. Not Path Finder.

Version: Path Finder 4.1.1
"Superb File Manager for OSX, loads of features"
Pros: In fact there's so many features you only discover them as time goes by. This product makes the Finder look clumsy and over-simplistic. There's multiple panes and drawers, all customisable. Built in image-viewer, text, rtf and word file viewer, compression algorithms, image manipulation, more info than you could ever use, manage file permissions etc.... My first response was I'm not spending 35 bucks on a file manager, but I used the trial period and I bought it half way through...an excellent product. You'll find discussion of it on 43folders and other Mac-focussed productivity sites. The one bummer is the manual or singular lack there of. Cocoatech's forums and hosts are excellent however.
Cons: Needs a great manual. Deserves a great manual....
