Publisher's description
From Partedmagic :Parted Magic is a Linux LiveCD/USB/PXE with its elemental purpose being to partition hard drives. Optimized at approximately 30MB, the Parted Magic OS employs core programs of GParted and Parted to handle partitioning tasks with ease, while featuring other useful programs (e.g. Partition Image, TestDisk, fdisk, sfdisk, dd, ddrescue, etc.) and an excellent set of documentation to benefit the user.
An extensive collection of fileystem tools are also included, as Parted Magic supports the following: aufs, ext2, ext3, ext4, fat16, fat32, hfs, hfs+, jfs, linux-swap, ntfs, ocfs2, reiserfs, reiser4, xfs, and zfs. Version 1.7 the proper FHS /mnt and /media directories were added. /mnt and /media are writable. Replaced GParted documents with the official Parted MagicDocuments. Many others bugs have been fixed.

Version: Parted Magic 1.7
"Works great! I love it. Much faster than partition magic. It's also free!"
Pros: Free. Simple user interface. Support WindowsXP. Works extremely fast. It's also small. So far the only free version that works. I downloaded partion logic, but it doesn't work with my XP laptop.
Cons: Maybe someone will complain about it actually requires a CD, but I actually think it's better than install it on your harddisk. Who want to perform partition often?

Version: Parted Magic 1.7
Pros: You download the file, unzip it and burn it AS A CD IMAGE so you can boot from it. If you can't do this (the cd image thing, changing boot order in the bios) then this software is not suitable for you.
Runs a kind of live linux environment straight off the cd ,or installed into RAM if you prefer, as a kind of sandbox. This is mainly to keep the software free and avoid licensing issues though no doubt it also gets around some of the more exotic nastiness that Microsoft insists is essential to Windows. GParted is then loaded into this environment and basically runs in much the same way Partition Magic does, in fact the whole experience is very similar to Partition Magic without the financial outlay.
Cons: Remember to check and fix all your disks before resizing as if it comes up against anything too confusing it stops. Digging down into the message you come up with an error to the effect that Windows has made the mess and Windows can jolly well clear it up before we resize partitions. And something to do with journalling which if you know ntfs in depth might make more sense to you. Any how, a boot back into XP and full checking of disks fixes this and then the software runs.
Also it didn't work properly in default mode on my laptop, however the other options (some kind of vesa something or other if you have a rubbish machine, in the menu options on boot) did the trick and off we went.
It isn't actually running in Windows. You need to be able to boot from a cd. You need to be able to burn an ISO file. If you can not do these things then this is not the software for you (if you can not do these things, have you considered an alternative career or perhaps some IT training?).
Can this be run in Cygwin? Could it be included in the Ultimate Boot cd or a Bart PE distro? Just a thought, it's dead handy :)
