CNET Editors' review
Even those of us who back up files religiously sometimes lose things, and it's safe to say that a lot of us don't back up quite as religiously as we should. ParetoLogic Data Recovery can help you recover files that have been lost due to accidental deletion, hard drive corruption, or other causes. Note, however, that we said that it can, not that it will.
The program's interface is well-designed and intuitive, with its major features arranged in four sections. Users can choose between a quick scan, full scan, or guided scan, as well as an advanced scan that lets users specify the types of files they're looking for. A separate e-mail scanning utility lets users search for specific e-mails within e-mail applications like Outlook. Scan results are displayed in a list, and depending on the file, can be previewed before the file is actually recovered. Although the program seemed to do a thorough job of scanning and recovered quite a few files, it didn't seem to find the specific files that we were looking for, and a lot of the files that were recovered couldn't be opened. That's the chance you take with these sorts of programs, though; sometimes they can recover what you've lost, and sometimes they can't. We were disappointed that we weren't able to scan for files on our digital camera; although ParetoLogic Data Recovery claims that it can scan external devices, we couldn't get it to recognize the external devices we plugged in. The program's built-in Help file is fairly well-written, but wasn't any help when we tried to troubleshoot this problem.
ParetoLogic Data Recovery installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program to all users.
Editor's note: This is a review of the full version of ParetoLogic Data Recovery 1.1. The trial version does not recover files and has a nag screen.Publisher's Description

"not trustworthy"
Version: ParetoLogic Data Recovery 1.1
Pros
Might retrieve files. Questionable. Time and memory intensive program which does not necessarily accomplish task.

Expensive, $50, and it signs you up for a recurring fee every year when you buy it.

Deceptive tactics. Recommend not to buy. There are free alternatives.

"Saved Hundreds of Lost Images"
Version: ParetoLogic Data Recovery 1.1
Pros
Saved all image formats including DNG, CR2, jpg, PSD files. I tried using several other recovery programs, but they didn't work, except PhotoRec, which has a difficult interface and does not retain file names. ParetoLogic has a nice user interface.
Cons
It's not free.
Summary
This product saved me.
