OsiriX for Mac

Publisher's Description

From OsiriX:

OsiriX is an image processing software dedicated to DICOM images produced by medical equipment (MRI, CT, PET, PET-CT, ...) and confocal microscopy (LSM and BioRAD-PIC format). It can also read many other file formats: TIFF (8,16, 32 bits), JPEG, PDF, AVI, MPEG and Quicktime. It is fully compliant with the DICOM standard for image comunication and image file formats. OsiriX is able to receive images transferred by DICOM communication protocol from any PACS or medical imaging modality (STORE SCP - Service Class Provider, STORE SCU - Service Class User, and Query/Retrieve) .

OsiriX has been specifically designed for navigation and visualization of multimodality and multidimensional images: 2D Viewer, 3D Viewer, 4D Viewer (3D series with temporal dimension, for example: Cardiac-CT) and 5D Viewer (3D series with temporal and functional dimensions, for example: Cardiac-PET-CT). The 3D Viewer offers all modern rendering modes: Multiplanar reconstruction (MPR), Surface Rendering, Volume Rendering and Maximum Intensity Projection (MIP). All these modes support 4D data and are able to produce image fusion between two different series (for example: PET-CT).

Osirix is at the same time a DICOM PACS workstation for medical imaging and an image processing software for medical research (radiology and nuclear imaging), functional imaging, 3D imaging, confocal microscopy and molecular imaging.

Osirix supports a complete plug-ins architecture that allows you to expand the capabilities of OsiriX for your personal needs! This plug-in architecture gives you access to the powerfull Cocoa framework with an easy object-oriented and dynamic language: Objective-C.

"Program for viewing x-rays in OS X without Windows."

    June 12, 2011  |   By sncohen9

    Version: OsiriX 3.9.2

    Pros

No need to switch to Boot camp or an emulation program to run Windows to view x-rays or scans. This takes the hassle out of viewing films from a Mac

    Cons

May not be as fast as running it in Windows

    Summary

Excellent program for viewing films without the inconvenience going to a Windows format.

"NOT compatible with Powerbooks without the Intel chip."

    May 30, 2011  |   By oppyxray

    Version: OsiriX 3.9.1

    Pros

    None for me.,,,

    Cons

If you don't have the Intel chip in your Mac, STAY AWAY from this. Use v3.7.1
CNET is worthless in helping to warn about this. I've asked them several times.

    Summary

If your Mac does not have the Intel chip, stay away from v. 3.8.1
CNET is no help and is no Version Tracker (rest the V.T. souls)..

    "Well designed and very capable"

    March 2, 2010  |   By rigel2100

    Version: OsiriX 3.6.1

    Pros

Lots of features, more than I could use. Useful to medical professionals and non-medical people.

    Cons

The more complicated features aren't intuitive to the untrained person but appear to be easily accessible to professionals in the field.

    Summary

The software is simple enough to be used by non-medical people, such as myself, but robust enough to allow professionals to perform comparisons and view in multiple perspectives.

    "Very nice medical viewer"

    August 22, 2009  |   By krisamico

Very functional and powerful viewer for medical images. Was very easy to figure out how to look at a CD from a recent ultrasound -- just hit the CD-ROM toolbar button. Nice! When I wanted to explore further, the UI was not too hard to understand, though I discovered right away that I will have to do some reading to unlock OsiriX's full potential. Thanks for making this! I am loving it so far!

    "Powerful and solid"

    Version: OsiriX 3.3

    Summary

I am not a medical professional, but (unforunately) have had some issues necessitating some medical imaging over the past year or so. I recently had an MRI, and they gave me a CD with the image files. OsiriX was great way for me to study the images. It worked superbly in 2-d and 3-d modes, and has many useful and intuitive features.

I haven't used other programs of a similar nature, but this one worked so very well for me that I didn't have any motivation to look elsewhere.

    "The best by far"

    August 25, 2005  |   By stam66

    Version: OsiriX 2.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
The continously expanding feature set and stability of this software exceeds it's commercial rivals by a factor of 10 at least, and it's clearly one of the better opensource applications for existence as well as one of the best Mac medical programs. I've used this extensively for clinical and researc work, and a minor glitch with echocardiograms was quickly corrected by a responsive author (thanks Antoine!).
There is nothing out there (on windows either AFAIK), which even comes close, particularly for freeware. Higly recommended.

OsiriX is useful for just about any set of images. If I had one wish, that would be for DICOM Print. Outstanding software.

    "Outstanding"

    December 13, 2004  |   By pdsi

    Version: OsiriX 1.5.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Not only the best Mac Workstation software but possibly the best Workstation software period. Extremely polished interface, nice unexpected iPod integration (which I have found handy, by the way), surprisingly good 3D renderings, etc. A lot of work has gone into this application and it is very welcome to the Macintosh.

If DICOM Print could be added, this would be the ultimate radiology workstation.

    "Excellent..."

    April 25, 2004  |   By stam66

    Version: OsiriX 1.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This is an excellent DICOM reader for the mac... very stable and performs well. I use this for digital echocardiography, and it with this verison it works a treat (Thanks Antoine!). I'd still like to see a choice of what meta-data is displayed. I'd also like to be able to select at least 2 (or 4, eg for stress echo) images/loops and be able to play them simultaneously. While it will open multiple loops at present, they wont play simultaneously (at least on my 17'' powerbook 1GHz, 512 Ram).
All in all, this is a highly recommended DICOM reader, and it's only going to get better...
